Windows Live Messenger is much improved over the old MSN but I'm sure there will be people either sad to see it go or who will have a lot of memories.

In many ways MSN changed the way we communicate or allowed us to accept various forms of instant communication. MSN , SMS, Twitter are all part of the same package.

Still I know heaps of people who have never used a MSN type of tool and surprisingly it is a tool which never successfully infiltrated business. I always thought that it (talking generically) was an ideal form of communication in small business especially.

I moved over to Digsby a year or so ago and although I check out WinLiveMess now-and-again Digsby is a best in class IMO.
Digsby has just updated too - and its memory use is small, its task bar notification of all your emails, twitter and Facebook is fantastic. It looks great, runs flawlessly in 7 and obviously, connects with all your other IM accounts.

Pidgin is open source and if you just want IM, is highly regarded. I presume its fine in 7.

I never even knew they had a web based Messenger service, I've always installed the actual app or if I'm out-and-about I use e-messenger on my smart phone.
(e-messenger because the phones too old to run the Messenger Mobile app.)

They kept that service quiet.

Sadly, I think Microsoft keeps too many services quiet. For example, very few people that I talk to know about the 25GB of free online storage with SkyDrive, and even less know it's free.

I would say from this thread alone I am learning more about what Microsoft offers than anything else I have ever read. And, thanks to Charles Kane for the digsby thing. I had NO clue that ever existed and since I am getting a bit sick of connecting to different things all at once, this will be a great addition. Thanks SO much!

Pleasure, just mind not to let them install their advertising stuff, only an issue when you do your first install so I've never even seen it, but its the usual toolbar crap.
I just love the way I've made it look and its ability to keep me up to date on my multiple email addresses (from the task bar) is just great.

Oh and welcome to the forum. Great stuff here but the Tutorials are outstanding.

Microsoft had to let MSN Web Messenger go because there weren't many people using it. Many of us had already moved over to alternatives and most importantly, Windows Live Messenger. It was sensible of them to do this. And Skydrive is a very great feature of Microsoft that everyone should know of. It's basically 25 GB of Free Space. But the problem is uploading to these servers. My upload speed is sadly very low.

Thank you for the kind welcome. I have actually been keeping an eye on this forum since January but finally decided to join in on the fun.

I made sure not to install the other junk (I am advanced enough to avoid that BS), and have been loving my experience on Digsby so far. I have a few email accounts and three IM accounts and this has been awesome. Any other IM suggestions, or Digsby options I should look at? Might need a whole new thread! lol

Oh, and I used MSN web messenger on the odd occasion that I was on a computer that had no access to the MSN client. Worked wonders in those days.

Digsby is all pretty obvious I think - tabbed IM windows, plenty of plugins, nice skins, close to the Taskbar and have all your notifications show ....

Does that mean that sites like ebuddy.com won't be able to use messenger services?

MSN Messenger does not die. WEB messenger does.

Quite right.

Here's the Windows Live Blog announcement

26/06/2009
MSN Web Messenger is retiring

With new web-based instant messaging (IM) now available in Windows Live Hotmail worldwide, we are preparing to retire MSN Web Messenger. The old MSN Web Messenger experience will end on June 30, 2009.
With Hotmail’s new web-based IM, you can chat from your Hotmail inbox or contact list, instead of going to MSN Web Messenger (MSN Web Messenger). Go directly to the Windows Live People page (also known as “your contact list”) at http://people.live.com and sign into Messenger (orange arrow in the picture below) to continue instant messaging on the web with your Messenger friends.

What I didn't realize is that the online version of Messenger is integrated into the Hotmail Interface.

I rarely use Hotmail and had never noticed it before.
