Wimbledon 3D in Media Center

If you didn't already know, the Wimbledon mens' and womens' finals will be broadcast in 3D on BBC HD. Apparently they will be broadcasting in side-by-side format, so people watching it through their TVs would just need to set up their TV to view in 3D.

However, I'm running Windows 7 Media Center on my PC, with a 3D monitor rather than a 3D TV.

Does anyone know what I'll have to do to set up Media Center to output a 3D signal to my monitor? I'm using the latest NVIDIA drivers, have the NVIDIA 3D Player and of course have the 3D glasses already!

Thanks for any help!

Hi there
The only way (as of Sat 25 June 2011) as far as I know is that you will have to use the HDMI output from an HD receiver to get your monitor to work.

This means that for example in the UK / W. Europe the only practicable solution is a SKY HD Box (or Virgin or equivalent) which receives 3-D signals from a SATELLITE OR THIR OWN CABLE BOX.

A Freesat HD Box might also work if the BBC are transmitting 3-D HD from the FREESAT satellite - but I don't think there's any (at least in Europe) way you can receive 3-D terrestial signals via an antenna .

I Could be wrong but it seems you DO need some sort of special receiver to get 3-D signals so using Media Centre unless you can find some way of inputting HDMI signals from a Box won't work.

Media Centre seems only to accept component composite input (Aux video, Left audio right audio --both analog) and even here you need a stupid remote for this too.

I don't know if any experimental signals are being transmitted via the Internet -- I'm not sure of how this technology would work --but it would certainly screw your Bandwidth BIG time.

For the moment you are stuck with plugging in a BOX via HDMI if you want to view 3-D.

Thanks for your detailed reply!

Seems I won't be watching it in 3D then - I just receive Freesat HD through a tuner in my PC - I don't have a set top box, and my monitor only has VGA and DVI inputs! Shame.

Have had a look at watching it in 3D in the local Odeon, but it'll be about £15!

Hi there
Don't give up too easily -- I can't believe the BBC will spend all the money on 3-D without SOMEONE being able to watch WITHOUT paying SKY / VIRGIN etc. --After all the BBC is meant to be paid for by the license payers in the UK (although I like the content myself a lot of times even OUTSIDE the UK --the BBC is definitely one of the better TV / RADIO / INTERNET providers on this planet).

I suspect FREESAT (not not quite the same as FREEVIEW -- it gives a load more channels also in HD WITHOUT a subscription) supplies 3-D when available via HDMI but you do need a DISH and a BOX which can be had quite cheaply in the UK or FRANCE/ BELGIUM, NL, DE etc for around 50 EUR.

Note that it's a Given that 3-D needs at least an HD capable receiver which means effectively HDMI protocol output to the monitor / tv device..

I'm surprised that a 3-D monitor doesn't have HDMI input -- especially if it also servers as a TV. I don't think any 3-D stuff will be broadcast in DVI type format --you will certainly need HDMI which the FREESAT and other boxes already have.

BTW --forget the Odeon --go to the pub -- a lot more fun and when you get drunk enough the 3-D doesn't even need you to wear the'specs. !!
