need to rescue corrupt(?) external hard drive

Sure thing :) I hope it's the hardware of the enclosure, I've lost literally several thousand dollars of data before due to bunk drives.

I had a Seagate Free Agent go out. If you have registered the drive, Seagate will replace it. They were very efficient and helpful, but no data recovery.

The advantage to the FreeAgent drives is that you can change cables. The cables fit into the sata connections of the drive. You can get USB 2.0, USB 3.0, firewire and esata. They all fit on the drive the same way. If there is a problem that is not the drive, it is the cable connections or the cable itself. I have 2 of them and really like them for their versatility.

Also, if you open the case, you void the warranty.

ok fair enough, but it still can be the PCB as they will have to go through that, esata firewire and USB, and yes of course will void warranty, but if u care more about the data than the cost of the drive, its worth it.
