It's nothing new, we have always had to pay more for everything and if it's computer hardware or Audio or visual equipment we usually don't get it until about 6 months after the rest of the developed World.

true. I just don't get how they expect to get people to upgrade. Most are happy running XP coz everything works. Why upgrade? Sure the day will come when their printer breaks down and their new one won't run on XP but that'll be long after win7. These are tough times financially people don't have that kind of money particularly since most users don't know or don't care what os they have. As long as they can browse the internet and send/recieve email.

m$ are kidding and they'll suffer for it.

I think MS just swap the $ for the local currency without accounting for the exchange rate.

Unfortunately our population is still relatively small and I don't Microsoft could care less how many copies they sell to us, compared to there Global sales we would be fairly insignificant.

Hi there
actually the worst place for "ripping" people off on Computer / Electronic gear that I've found is actually the UK-- although with the drop in the value of GBP Vs Euro it's not so bad.

Until recently if you bought a Computer book in the UK it would show for example price as say 13 GBP or 14,50 USD -- no way is (even now) 14,50 USD anything like 13 GBP. (And there's no VAT on books in the UK).

I still think your best (and cheapest) bet for "Upgrading" to W7 is to take out a heavily discounted subscription to MS TECHNET -- for around 200 USD (discounted sub -- look for various "promo codes") you can get MULTIPLE LICENSES to almost as much software you need including W7 (when released) Office 2007/2010 W2008 server etc etc.

If you have more than one computer to upgrade taking out a subscription is IMO a "No Brainer".

To any 'OZ out there -- whilst not a Cricket Fan normally (although I enjoyed the 20/20 series) I'm looking forward to the Ashes series

Love the rivalry between The Poms and the Aussies -- I'll bet that even if it was a Twiddleywinks chamionship both sides would still be deadly serious about winning it.

Cheers
jimbo

Those prices are ridiculous, how do you expect us to pay that much for it, Tbh, i think pirating of W7 will increase if those happen to become the final price.

For sure, I was already seriously considering a Technet Sub that I can get for $307 and that's cheaper than the cost of getting one copy of Ultimate and I have 2 computers I wanted to upgrade. As soon as I can, that's what i will be doing. ;)

I wonder if they expect cheaper copies from places like China and India to ultimately get into Australia or something, thus actually dragging prices down....

that's exactly what i did and it's best to grab it while that offer lasts. Beats paying over $500.

I don't know where Jimbo gets the $200 usd from .

I do know some people who paid around $290 usd after promo code deductions.

There seems to be a decent disount for Australia ATM.

Other countries may not get any decent discount at all and have MS differential pricing.

You get 10 keys for personal evaluation only. ( You can ask for more - but you probably need a good reason).

If you have 3 or more machines, and you want a copy of Office or similar - it may be good value.

Many people only want to get 7 for 1 ( maybe 2 ) machines - $49 for premium on the pre order upgrade offer.

You have to consider what your requirements are.

That is fine IF you are able to get the Pre Order Upgrade Pomo.....as mentioned, it is not available in Australia at the moment.
With Home Premium Upgrade being $199 it only needs 2 machines to warrant to use of a Technet Subscription...plus you can choose which SKU you want...it isn't an Upgrade and hopefully your Subscription will last until Office 2010 is out.

Hi there
Try looking for 20% discount promo codes -- they might not work in UK but just log on to a server in another country if you can.

That way it's a LOT cheaper. Currently UK seems to only offer 10% which isn't a lot -- so it's possible to get round via alternate server.

Stiill if you have several computers to upgrade it is likely in any case to be cheaper than paying retail prices for multiple licences.

Cheers
jimbo

There is no uprade promo. for Europe because MS decided not to sell upgrades at all.

Afaik that's not the case in Oz - they may announce it soon.

To date the only Upgrade offers on the M$ Australia site are for PC's purchased during the timeframe and Full Retail versions of Vista that comply (most likely Home Premium and Business).

If M$ were going to run the same Pre-Order upgrade offer they would have announced it straight up, so I doubt they will offer it now.
