Hi all.
While I have basic knowledge of this kind of thing, this is beyond my knowledge and I'm hoping to get some insight from you guys.

There are certain games, specifically games that use P2P connections that we cannot play together without not being able to connect or some kind of ridiculous lag.

This time, it's DFO, which uses P2P in dungeons. We both have disabled our firewalls, made firewall exceptions for DFO on all ports, tried using Hamachi by setting up a network, however we were unable to ping eachother, and as a last resort have enabled DMZ; all to no avail. Is there anyway he could get a different IP address from me? Playing on the same connection has given us both the same IP addresses.

Any insight? :(

Sorry, I forgot to mention that we play in the same house and connection. Both of our IP addresses (from whatismyip.com) are the same.

try on one of your machines opening cmd.exe from the start menu, and type ipconfig /release and hit enter, then type ipconfig /renew

This might work, and if not, then your wireless or wired router might be causing the problem :)

It could well be that the game itself won't accept more than one connection from a single IP. If that is what it is as long as you are both behind the same modem/router there isn't much you can do.

Is there anyway he could get a different IP address from me?

From you no. He/you would need to wither get a second IP address from your ISP (which a lot don't/won't do), or a second internet connection.

We both did that and our IP from whatismyip.com stayed the same, although our IPv4 addresses under IP config are different. Which would be the problem?

It could be either depending on the game. Your WAN address is going to be the same so long as you are both behind the same modem. That is the address whatismyip is giving.

^So do you think there is there any way to fix this problem besides purchasing another internet connection? It's only on P2P games and to my understanding, this has to do with the same public IP trying to make two connections with the other player.

You could try talking to your ISP and explain that you need two different IP addresses, one for each of your computers. If they try to say they can't do it, threaten them with finding someone who can.

I was told to contact their business department to request a second IP. Too bad they're closed now, but I'll be calling tomorrow morning. Atleast that means they can do it.

The thing here would be the game itself.
only thing I can come up with involves ports but not many games support the feature very well. And even then if the authentication server is seeing them as one person a problem will arise whenever they try to play together.
There's a lot of MMO's where this isn't a problem, I know of a couple of fps games where it is.
Basically I don't think you two are doing anything wrong I think it's time to get some support from the people that made the game.

Would requesting another IP be worth it? I definitely don't think it's our problem, because this is one of a select few bunch of games that we have difficulty playing due to being on the same connection. Once again, the P2P things comes into the problem unfortunately. It's worth a shot, what other ideas do you have involving ports?

We both sent supports tickets regarding this problem to the game developers customer service, but God knows how long F2P game support takes to respond, lol.

This issue is similar to Open, Moderate, and Strict NAT for xbox 360 games. The resolution for that was in your router enable UPnp, or you may need to open specific ports, which is what i had to do for my xbox and i havent had any issues

what it boils down to is while both of you have a different private ip, the router you use for your home network has to then translate that to a public IP. NAT, Network address Translation

Do some google searches on your game you play and see if you need to open up specific ports, If your bandwidth is pretty slow this could also cause your problem

Cable, DSL?

We are using Cable, Comcast to be exact. We have the ports that need to be opened, but we don't know how to open them on our router. There does not seem to be an option in our router configuration, only port forwarding, but we aren't sure how to properly do that.

The ports are:
10001, 10006, 10010-10044, 7101-7103, 10051-10053, 5063, 12975, 32976

We did also try creating inbound rules for these ports under Windows (7) Firewall Advanced Settings.

port forwarding is what you need to allow looks like you have a range of ports to forward

what kind of router are you using?

i wouldnt change anything on the pc other than hardsetting it a private ip so you can tell the router that your pc with X ip is allowed to forward X, Y, Z ports

^They only have up to the N3 version of my router on the list, whereas mine is N4. I didn't think there was much difference, so I added the ports and everything. Even made sure through the router config. It asked for a starting and ending port, so does it also use all of the ports in between?
