Boyfriend and I cannot play from same LAN.

Hi guys.
Just a basic question. Certain online games we play use P2P connections. We are playing from the same network thus have the same IP address. We have opened/forward required ports for the game, enabled DMZ, tried using Hamachi to no avail. Would purchasing a 2nd IP address from our ISP fix this problem?

Pandasurus, You have hit on the problem and I believe that you are correct in that you will need a separate IP for your boyfriend.
A solution would be that your ISP provide you with a second IP, But you will need an appliance from your ISP that would in effect give you a separate network for you and a separate network for your boy friend.

What ISP are you using?
I know that comcast has gateways that provide more than one IP and you then connect a router to each one and they end up as separate networks.

Otherwise without a Router you can connect both your machines to a separate port on the gateway and you will have to manually set your IP, gateway and such on each machine.

But, this could make you vulnerable to the bad guys if you don't have a good firewall for your machines. lots of ports have to be closed or they will figure out a way to get to your machine.

But again,
If your isp can provide you a modem with more than one port, it can act as a gateway switch and provide each of you with a separate IP.

Whatever is priced more reasonable.

I have a friend that uses Comcast with 5 static IP's and he pays around $125 per month for 20/7 service which works great for him.
He ends up with a router on each port for IP translation and his kids don't get in trouble and they can play the games that require unique IP's.

By purchasing a 2nd IP address I would recommend to you, This may not work though because it could be ANYTHING stopping you from playing.
A tip: Try running a full system scan on your virus system. (Recommended-Avast free anti-virus)

From what I've read online from people with similar experiences, they only had to buy a switch/hub to use the second IP, but I may have misunderstood. Please let me know if I have something mixed up.

Contact Comcast, maybe they will give you another IP along with a modem/router.

Sorry, I must have confused you with my question. I know to call Comcast and request a second IP, but I have read that instead of another modem or router, I can use a switch or hub to hook my boyfriends computer up to that will separate the IPs. Will this work?

Also, will this work or do I need the other equipment?

Step one, call comcast, tell them you want an extra ip address.

step two, take ethernet line out of the wan port of the router, and plug it into the 1st lan port. (makes it a switch)

step three, move wires in 123 over if needed, usualy just take the one in plug 1 and move it to 4 on the router if its open.

Sorry for the double post. My boyfriend contacted Comcast and requested a second IP. The guy told him that they no longer can offer more than one IP to a residential account. Is there any other (cheaper) way to assign different WAN addresses without getting a second connection?

Not that I know of outside of ordering a dsl line which would end up being a second IP for one of you to use. Of course that would cost money and probably be slower than your comcast line.
Unless you call comcast and purchase a business line with static IP's. which of course would be more expensive.

Because you want completely separate wan IP's, that's about the only way to gol

what games?--for some games you need to install 'separate accounts' on each computer (not from the same game install disk) then the same IP address doesn't matter

They are not games installed from discs, but online games.

@Rich: Thank you for all of your assistance.

Another quick question. We purchased a new, MUCH better router today and I am trying to forward the ports. Am I doing it right?
