Helping my daughter today with a "new" (refurbed actually) ASUS laptop T4500, with a Home Premium 64-bit OS on it.

Everything more or less worked okay out of the box as far as I can tell.

But in the initial setup (the stuff that launches the first time you turn the computer on), when I (correctly) picked my time zone - eastern US - the clock set one hour behind. Daylight time was correctly detected; without it I'd have been two hours behind.

I spent a little time trying to figure that out, couldn't get it to take, and finally copped out and picked Atlantic time, one time zone to the east of where I really am.

So now the time displays correctly, but I'm pretty bugged that, after setting up maybe a dozen computers from Windows 98 to Windows 7, I am faced with a stupid glitch like this that I've never seen before.

Other than the date/time control panel, which I've of course tried and failed with, is there some odd hidden setting that would explain why I have to have the computer set to the Atlantic daylight time zone to correctly display the eastern daylight time?

Sounds like daylight saving time is not factored in
Set the clock

It was.

Win7 is to automatically detect DST, and it does so correctly. If I manually override the setting and uncheck DST, the computer time goes back one hour, making me two hours behind.

After I posted I had the epiphany to check the region settings, which I did, and the region was correctly set to United States.

So I'm still at a loss as to what is wrong.

That solved it. I would like to think that, with a cool head and time on my hands, I'd have eventually tried it. But I didn't until you made the suggestion. Thanks.
