400 Million Windows 7 Licenses Sold

Today during the Day 1 keynote of our annual Microsoft Worldwide Partner Conference, Steve Ballmer revealed that Windows 7 has officially sold 400 million licenses to-date. Our previous statement of 7 copies of Windows 7 sold a second continues to hold true.

The article says that Internet Explorer 9 is the favorite browser today. It sure isn't with me. I had it on my desktop and my netbook. I'm back to IE 8 as I like it better. But that's only my opinion. I guess I'm with the minority.

Funny to see how many people are holding on to Windows XP. If they would just move over to a new OS or stop using the horribleness that is IE 6 that would be great.

That said and this could be slightly off topic but Windows 7 x64 cannot hold a candle to say Ubuntu Natty Narwhal in terms of performance. I am just blown away by how fast everything is in Linux! Especially development! If I did not play games I don't think I would have had any of my computers running Windows 7 at all!

My grandson still uses XP SP3 on a computer with 1GB RAM and hasn't the slightest interest in looking at another operating system until the time comes to replace his computer.

Lol, completely true, everytime I use Ubuntu to fix a problem with Windows (Live CD) I get really jealous that I can't use this as my main OS. Its only gaming and Steam which is Win-Mac only (I'm a gamer) that keeps me from doing so...

That is actually quite smart of your grandson. There is no way Windows 7 would run half as near as good as XP is running with those kinds of resources. If however he were to try something like Damn Small Linux or one Lubuntu, then he might even enjoy his computing experience even more. Just a suggestion

MS does not realy care at this point they are going to ramp up starting in the spring for windows 8. 400 Million means they want to see 400 million upgrades.

That is because XP is not a resourceful as Windows 7 and will run on even 256MB RAM about the same amount found in a Tablet - But Windows 7 is Stable with the appropriate hardware

The number counts licenses sold, so we would probably be looking at them counting business licensing for Windows (SA renewal this OS cycle and new license contracts), OEM sales, retail purchases, and upgrades (online or off). I don't know if Technet or MSDN licenses would count, only because even a basic (non-library) license for either covers more than just one version of the supported OSes, including servers, and I'd bet licenses are only in the single-digit or tens of millions anyway. Given that these numbers (MSDN and Technet licenses) aren't retail (or even able to be used for anything but testing according to their EULAs for each agreement), they wouldn't be able to be tracked as official sales anyway - that's the main reason I would think these are not included.

Pirated ones would not count ... I think they just check the amount of Activations not individual sales

Pirated ones should not activate
