Amnesia, I remember the fear and anxiety playing it. That game is incredible. The most immersive game I've ever played.

You know... as recently as 2 weeks ago I would be waxing lyrical on the gargantuan Lilith mod for Titan Quest - not so much a mod as a total game makeover. New maps - the entire game world is replaced - new quests, new items... then grab one of the masteries mods and you've basically got yourself an entirely new game: it adds more than the official expansion Immortal Throne that it's practically a sequel.

Then I came across Terraria when a friend purchased it.

At first glance I thought it was just another crummy Flash-like game but I decided to give it a try since I have a soft spot for retro-looking stuff anyway. 3 minutes turned into half an hour, which then turned into an all-nighter - much to the annoyance of said friend, and I turned up at the office the next day in the same clothes, lmao.

Needless to say I quickly bought my own copy (get it on Steam) - I'm hooked. Like an addict on crack. I've stopped playing all those flashy high-def games with movies and cutscenes and voiceovers and all that bling just to play this little 2D thing.

Terraria--collage.png

Check out the official wiki for some starting out tips. Get the game from Steam, it'll be the best $20 (or less if the discount is still going) you'll ever spend. (Unless you're the type who likes all that flashy junk I mentioned earlier in your games.)

And it's got multiplayer - I'm not really a fan of mp, but I can see how it's a big deal for certain types of players. You can host your own server and select the player limit. Team up coop or pvp.

Now if you'll excuse me, I have a botched gold ore mining operation to salvage. Had to ditch it earlier and hightail it back to base when the zombies started battering down my fortress doors and eating the NPCs...

Finished Portal 2. Took me about 8 hours, which is what most places were saying length wise. Loved every minute of it. Some of the tests really made me think about it, and the ending was very unexpected, lol.

Waiting for a friend to finish it, too, then we're gonna try co-op.

Yeah Portal 2 is a great game, I just didn't think it was worth (and didn't pay) $50 bucks. Great game though, and I absolutely loved the puzzles, and ending.

My only complaint was I thought the graphics weren't any better than Portal 1, which was released in 2007

Yea I wouldn't pay full price for it, but think it was worth the 50% off in the sale, lol.

I think there's subtle differences with the graphics too with the smaller updates the Source engine has had since 2007, such as larger scale physics, more advanced water etc etc. It's the downside to the Source engine though; it doesn't get as many updates as it should like it's still on DX9

Hmm, maybe.

One thing I will say about the source engine is that it never strains systems.

And it's not like the graphics are bad, they just look a tad dated, but to be honest I've seen worst, even in some of today's games

Yea I'm not saying anything bad about it. It's one of my, if not, favourite engines and I love the graphics on it and love the physics as well. Like Sygnus said it's really easy going on any system, even low end ones can manage to run games, but it would have been nice for a bit more of a graphic increase for a major game like Portal 2.

And yea back when HL2 was released I was blown away completely by Source. Took me so long to complete it as I just examined everything possible, lol.

Same here. BTW love absolutely Half-Life 2 - Episode's 1 & 2 outdoors scene. Just gorgeous, even now.

Anyway I'm enjoying Oblivion right now, and yeah those texture packs - Qarl's Texture Pack 3, and Natural Environment are impressive - even if my system stutters as it renders the distant scenes :D (will have to fix that).
Anyway the game looks really really good

I think it's mostly different because Ezio isn't as condescending and elitist as Altair. Once ACII gets going and you get in to the thick of it all it's a great game. AC: Brotherhood is much better though that continues on afterwards.

Unique landscapes and Illumination Within are some really good ones too. :)

IW makes lights shine through Windows at nights. Just a little touch that makes things look much better IMHO. And UL just adds a variety of distant textures.

As far as the stuttering, you'll never get rid of it completely. :(
You'll have it even with a complete Vanilla version of the game as well.
But as I mentioned before, the Anti-Stutter Plug in and fast Exit Plug ns do help a good deal, although some stutter will still be present.
The only downside is you may want to edit the Anti-Stutter ini a bit for your needed.

Personally, I found setting the Min Frames to 30 and Max Frames to 60 was all that was needed. (Deafault is Min=15 Max=30 I think)

Something else I found helps with Oblivion too is putting it on a SSD. If it isn't already, you may want to try moving it and create a junction. Its one of those games that can get a bit of benefit from it, other than just initial loading times.

@Boogie
I just recently finished Alice. It is a good Game, especially if you like platformers.
I enjoyed it, but still need to go through it again to get all of the secrets to unlock the Disturbing Memories.
The story is OK, and you can get a bit more of it by collecting memories .. which works sort of like Bioshocks Tape Recorders.

The only downside is that it gets a bit repetative. However, the enviroments are really nice, gameplay is smooth, and when it does start getting a bit repetative ... you tend to want to move on just to see whats next. At least it was the case for me.
You can expect Approx 15hrs for your first playthrough, which isnt to bad for a modern adventure game.

The only other thing about Alice I think would be worth mentioning is that ..
Although the Keyboard and Mose works with it, I found the game a bit easier and much more enjoyable using the Xbox360 controller. It just seems to be really designed for it, and plays better with it.
Some may disagree, but thats my thoughts anyway.

Well that may true but for now I'll just stick to what I already have cause if I start adding a lot of stuff I'll never finish the game cause I'll be too busy standing around marveling the scenery :D

Yeah for a moment I thought I was back in New Vegas with the way the game stutters

Personally, I found setting the Min Frames to 30 and Max Frames to 60 was all that was needed. (Deafault is Min=15 Max=30 I think)

I'll try some other tweaks to see if I can minimize the stuttering

Something else I found helps with Oblivion too is putting it on a SSD. If it isn't already, you may want to try moving it and create a junction. Its one of those games that can get a bit of benefit from it, other than just initial loading times.

Well I have all my games on a seperate spinner dedicated to games and have had very few performance issues other the the games that are known to have stuttering problems - FO3, FONV, Oblivion - hmmm..... all bethesda games

Anyway though I have enough space on my 120gig OS SSD drive to move the game over, I think I'll stick with my WD caviar Black drive untill I can get at least a 250gig SSD that I can dedicate to games.

Thanks for the tips/help though. Much appreciated :)

Dungeon Siege Screen - 0014.jpg

- currently playing my way through Legends Of Utrae..:geek:

this amazing game is actually a mod for the Dungeon Siege/Legends Of Aranna game
that Steam are currently selling in a package deal with Dungeon Siege 3..

The Legends Of Utrae mod, available for download free - utilizes the entire DS/LOA multiplayer map - and it's MASSIVE..!!
- it has it's own unique monsters and a storyline that makes you just want to keep going..
- it plays for hundreds of hours, and is always challenging and entertaining..

I'd give it 10/10, but then I'm biased - I don't mind admitting this little game is nothing short of a masterpiece..

- and yes, you can play it at 1600x900 widescreen..!!

I installed the Amnesia demo last night, oh GOD! I've never in my life have ever been frightened before from a game! I literally had tingles in my fingertips because I got so scared!

NOW, I finally realize why people say it's such a scary game...

 I want to try too
