Hey.

Since this is now my first SSD then I will go through the program "SSD Life" and check the status of my SSD now and then.

Today when I started I was a little scared of what was in the program itself.

http://img38.imageshack.us/img38/7958/ssdlife.png[/ IMG]

My Lifetime has reduced from 1 April 2020 to 9th March 2020! (lol, not what I was worried about).

But I was shocked that it says that there have been over 1TB written to my SSD disk, even tho I've only had it for 2 weeks!

I filled it with the 80GB in the form of the Windows 7, games and applications.
Then I've also Page File and Hibernationfile on SSDn, which takes up 8GB and 6GB each.

Could it be Page and Hibernationfilen that makes me have so much data written on my SSD?

I have now changed my Pagefile to another Harddrive to see the difference.

Anyways, a friend of mine has another SSD.
On his SSD there has been 1300 GB written over 3512 hours!!

He has 300GB more written than me, but it has been used for 3500 hours more.

What's happening with my SSD?
Anyone?

Best regards!

As first action I would get rid of the hibernation file. Saves space on the SSD too.

Then I would periodically check in Resource Monitor > Disk tab which processes do all the writing.

Hi.

I have got rid of the hibernation file.

About Resource Monitor, System is on top with a write of between 85000-120000 Bytes/second.

Second comes Firefox and then Skype.

Something is really strange about my SSD? I mean, So much data written in such short ammount of time.

Im really curious and would like to know whats writing so much!

Superfetch and Defrag have been disabled since day 1

I can also mention that in the last 1 hour the SSD has written 24GB.

I havent done anything but having Firefox and Skype running.

What is wrong? :S

None of those numbers look extraordinary. Maybe it was the indexing that did all the writes in the beginning. I would keep checking Resource Monitor from time to time. There are also a lot of error reports the system can write. Maybe you want to stop those.

Btw: I think it is not a good idea to turn Superfetch off - makes your system slower. But I know there are still a lot of people that worry about the extra write operations. I never turn it off and even on my 3 year old SSD I still have a lifetime until 2020. My other 4 SSDs are younger and will live even longer - if the program report is correct.

Thanks, but I've heard its prefered to turn it off that's why Ive done so.

If these numbers continue to grow like this I'm most likely going to re-install W7 from scratch and hope for the best.

Use this tutorial and disable hibernate.> http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/819-hibernate-enable-disable.html

You don't get rid of it you just turn it off.

Search Indexing also takes some extra space when you first install Windows.
Nothing to worry about though.

The picture below is taken from the on going testing page of xtremeforums.> http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?271063-SSD-Write-Endurance-25nm-Vs-34nm

They have written over 300 TiB to some of the SSD's now over 300,000GB. Over 200 TiB on several so over 200,000GB's of writes.
The ones with low write numbers are newly added to the testing.

Maybe that will give your concerns a rest.
As far as READ numbers they can run as much as 3-4 times Writes on an SSD.
My Reads are almost triple my Writes so far.

My guess would be that the system does most of the writes. As I said earlier, those are probably all sorts of reports and logs. Type eventvwr into the Start/search field and have a look how big your logs are.

I found this on the SSD Life website, don't know if you have already seen it:

Why does the date change dramatically?

In some cases, the estimated lifetime can change dramatically. It happens if the amount of data written to the drive quickly increases. For example, if you install some large game. But do not worry, literally in a couple of days SSDLife will figure out that it was a one-time upsurge and the disk is back to its normal amounts of written data so it will correct the estimated lifetime.

Built my first computer (8Mhz 8088cpu, 640K RAM, 20MB HDD, 2 360K floppy drives) in 1985 and have been building them for myself, relatives and friends ever since.
Thanks for all the help guys!

The problem has been solved!

After a restart of my computer, Windows7 stopped to write 700mb every third minute to my SSD.

Problem: I had used sleep (instead of Shutdown) for 3 nights in a row, it must have been that.
But is it known for W7 to write massive ammounts of data after sleep has been used? We are talking about when you are using your computer, not when it's actually sleeping.

Can anyone confirm this?

I don't like Windows 7 anymore, it has reduced the lifetime of my SSD :(

I don't have an SSD....yet, but I suspect there are more "lifetime estimators" to run. Using one is one person's opinion and may not be factual.
The test Hopalong referenced is quickly disproving SSD lifetime estimates. Windows 7 is not to blame. It Is the first OS to support TRIM. Allow your PC to set on the log on screen for a few hours.
In Sleep nothing is written to the drive except what is in RAM at the point of dozing off, which get restored to RAM upon waking. I think that's how it works.

I would not worry about the lifetime of your SSD. Even if it appears that a lot of data was written to it, in the total scheme it was peanuts.

I get ur point, still, my girlfriend (today when I wasnt at home) accidently used "Sleep" on my computer. When I arrived now, 16GB had been written. Before that, I had used my computer for 5hours, and nothing was written by then.
So I think it has to do with the Sleep function, no doubt about it.

That's true, but still as you may understand I got a little scared seeing those huge numbers! :)
