How do I kill AutoPlay so it's truly dead?

Every time I touch my laptop in the wrong place the DVD drive opens. That's annoying. But not half as annoying as the fact that, when I close the drive, Windows Media Player interrupts whatever it's doing to start whatever disk in it. I have AutoPlay in Control Panel set for "Take no action" in every case, but it makes no difference. Control Panel/Default Programs/Set your default programs/Windows Media Player shows it has "all its defaults" and clicking on "Choose defaults for this program" yields a long list of checkboxes all filled in and totally resistant to any efforts to uncheck them.

I'm the sort who puts a manual choke in every car he owns, and I hate AutoPlay. Can someone tell me how to make it go away? Or is there something else I need to do here?

Thank you so much for your careful reading of my query: I've already turned off AutoPlay for all devices through the Control Panel, but Windows Media Player insists on cutting off what it's doing and starting whatever DVD is in the drive when I close it.

How do I get Windows Media Player to ignore the CD/DVD drive until I instruct it to play what's in it (which I never do, preferring GOM Player)?

It would seem that DVDs can overrule all Windows settings and run themselves, if they wish. Thanks a lot, once again, Microsoft.

Yes we do! But, sometimes sentence structure gets in the way.

To be honest, I missed it also so you may as well take a bite outta' me! ........




There are times when, Windows Update (WU) does its thing, it resets some settings.
As users we are the final responsibility in what happens to our machines. We should be aware of what WU can do when its KB's are applied.

I took derekimo's reply as to reflect that, and Thought:

he's wondering if, there may have been a change since the last time you set/checked it.

I do not like the tedium either! But, I check'um.

Since you don't use WMP, wonder if you care to try this.....

Start > Default Programs > Set prorams access and computer defaults > Custom > under Choose a default media player, next to Windows media Payer heading, UN-check " Enable access to this program " > OK
