Backing up to a series of 10 DVDs is much more likely to result in problems than is a backup to a separate hard drive. I would hate to have to rely on an image from DVDs.

Question ONE:...If I do an image backup will that also backup Windows 7 files too?
Question TWO:..Can it be used on a new hard drive if ever I needed to replace it?....or would I need some other installation disc with it?

Thanks Guys

Yes to both questions. An image contains everything on a partition--Windows files, registry, configuration, licenses, personal data, etc--whatever is on the partition.

If you buy a new hard disc, you should be able to restore the image file directly to that new hard disc.

do u know the image backup is just a bad as the full backup requiring 10 or so discs....so I have decided to purchase a 1TB external hard drive to back up all computers in house and put videos and photos on too :-)

That's probably for the best.
External hard drives that are simple are usually the most reliable. I wouldn't get one of the one touch backup type externals.
I've had nothing but nightmares from those things.

Actually that was kind of my point, the simple ones are the best. It's actually one thing I wouldn't have recommended spending big on.

I have the exact same notebook, Samsung 519 and i use an external 1TB hard drive to make a system image using the Samsung Recovery Solution. I have had to call upon this image backup in the past which worked without problems, plus you dont need a boot disk to restore as you just hold down the F4 key at boot up.
When i first done the image backup i did burn a set of dvd,s as well but got errors when trying to restore from that backup set so now i just use the external hard drive.
I dont like the recovery solution for making backups of just the data from within windows as it does not do incremental backups, i use a windows home server for that purpose but thats an expense that not many people will go to but it works for me.
Also i use windows live mesh for backing up just my important documents to the cloud but you only get 5 gig of synced storage with that unless you have another pc to sync to, which it allows any amount of data to be synced from pc to pc.
All my photo,s are manually synced to skydrive as yet another backup solution which can be viewed from any computer.

Hope this helps.

No it does not boot from external hard drive, it boots in to the recovery software by pressing F4 and then you can select to restore the laptop from the image that you have made on the external.
Read the tutorial on how to use samsung recovery solution elsewhere in this thread.

You can use the Samsung Recovery Disks.

My Samsung R519 did not come with any disks at all and i had to make them before i done anything else, so you could use them.
When i made mine i took three dvds, but you have to do this before you install loads of programs and data to save on using to many dvds.

As a matter of fact you dont. Recovery disks are created from the contents of the oem installed recovery partition which are not affected by programs and data added to the system partition. Recovery disks can be made any time as long as the recovery partition and a recovery manager software are functional.
