In some scenarios users will be able to gain a boost of performance from their USB storage devices if they increase the maximum transfer size from the default, Microsoft revealed.

This is why the Redmond company is now providing a hotfix designed to help customers get a bump in terms of the transfer size of their USB storage devices.

The software giant is calling KB 2581464 an update, but it´s only available for download from Microsoft Support and not served as an automated refresh through Windows Update.

Another MS SNAFU: The HotFix download page (which you get via an E-Mail after telling MS your email ID) requires a UserID and Password but the KB article does not say what this is. Therefore, it is impossible to download the fix.

Plus the KB article says there is no need to modify the registry, and then further down it tells you that you do have to modify it.

And they pay people to create stuff like this???

Just keep refreshing the page or click the address bar and hit enter until you get a DL prompt. That's what I did

Note For some USB storage devices, performance can be improved if the maximum transfer size is increased from the default 64 KB. This update supports this change when the hardware vendor provides a device information file (INF) to set this value for the USB storage devices.

so i think that means it will only work if the Vendor gave drivers with the usb device? because most if not all have 3rd party usb flash drives that don't have inf/drivers with them... am i wrong?

1. First, download the hotfix (KB 2581464) and install it.
2. Click Start and type regedit in the Search box, and then press Enter.
3. Navigate to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE – SYSTEM – CurrentControlSet – Control – usbstor – VVVVPPPP.
4. If the VVVVPPPP key is not there, create a new key under ‘usbstor’ (see screenshot above)
5. Click Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORDValue.
6. Type MaximumTransferLength, and then press Enter.
7. Click Edit menu, and then click Modify. Select Decimal and type a value between 65535 (64KB) and 2097120 (2MB).

And how are users supposed to compare before and after results of applying the hotfix/registry edit to see if it even does anything, or if it's just a bunch of malarkey? Or if creating the new key even makes it work in the first place, since MS doesn't even mention it?

you could just use a Benchmark tool like

CrystalDiskMark 3.0.1

HDTune

ATTO

run it on take a snapshot, then after the install run it again to see if there is any change in performance.

Just to add for more FYI (I don't have a USB HDD nearby so I can't test the accuracy):

If I'm not mistaken, these are the idVs and idPs for hardware (accessible via Device Manager)

just did it. here is what i got on a 16GB Flash drive.

Before & after.. not much of a boost really. more of a downgrade.

look when i first got it. 8mbs on the write. now i don't get more than 6mbs? ..

*edit. just unistalled it. back to 8mbs writes.. how odd?

Ive tried now on several Hdds and Usbs and none show any significant increases at least on my devices
