GTX295 problems. Flickering/artifacts. Message from dealer inside.

**UPDATE 28/8: PLEASE READ LAST REPLY**

Hello dear users,

I've had my GTX295 for approx two years now, but yesterday it suddenly crashed when I tried to open 2x WoW screens at the same time (which have worked before).

Things I've tried;
- I've tried other games like Warcraft 3, HoN etc. and they seems to work fine.
- Reinstalled World of Warcraft, without any difference. Also tried to play on lower settings without any luck.
- Tried both newer and older Nvidia drivers
- Removing dust from the card
- The card is not overheating. It's only 50C (the card got to 90-95C when running benchmark in a cold cabinet, see pictures.)

Is this the end of my beloved GTX295 saga?

Thanks in advance.

Hi

Have you tried any stress test like FurMark?

FurMark: VGA Stress Test, Graphics Card and GPU Stability Test, Burn-in Test, OpenGL Benchmark and GPU Temperature | oZone3D.Net

A word of warning. Don't leave it unattended and watch your card temp displayed within the utility - press Esc if it gets to high.

UKMedia

Hello and thanks for your answer, UKmedia.

I just ran FurMark.

I stopped it after a few mins, because I think it got way too hot (94C)
A mate of mine also thought the card was destroyed out from the artifacts...

See those pictures;

It's the same artifacts as I got when I open WoW.

Damn...

That's really sucky for such a quality card. I've only had it for two years in a dust free computer...

I'm looking for a new card then, would GTX 560 or 570 be a good upgrade? The GTX 560 is pretty cheap compared to GTX 570 tho, but I am pretty unsure about which card to choose.

Or is ATI the way to go? I've had Nvidia for the last 6+ years.

Thanks.

BRG,
Evenol

Hi

Well I'm an NVidia fan and so can't comment on ATI cards but I'm sure someone else on the forum can help you there. If you are in to your gaming, then I would go for the GTX570 - if you can afford it.

Remember to remove the old drivers completely.

Update 28/8:

I delivered my card to the shop where I bought the card two years ago, and they told me if the card was destroyed they will replace it with a similar card.

After a few days they sent me this mail;

"We have the card in an enclosed cabinet without ventilation, and the card have been between 103 and 105 degrees for a couple of hours without any artifacts (in furmark with the max burn test).

Artifacts on the screenshot you sent usually means faulty card, yes. What drives etc do you use? They rarely cause such artifacts, but it can happen."

I've tried drivers from 280.26 down to like 195 from Nvidia, and nothing changed.

103 to 105 degrees is way too hot aswell, isn't it?

Thanks in advance!

I also want to add that I now got GTX570, and I have no problems what so ever with WoW, benchmark etc etc.

Hi

I would never run a card at that temp and especially not for hours.

I hope you enjoy your new card.

Uhm, I think the point is that no one would normally run a card at that temp. The people he bought the original card from, on the other hand, stated they tried to mimic a condition to replicate the issue and got it up to that high without a problem, therefore citing it could be a faulty card.

He called me now and said that they've had the card @ 105 degrees for 12 hours. I said to him that this is way too hot. He then said that "we've had cards like that @ 110 degrees without probs..."

Anyways, he will give me a new card. But he offered me a GTX560 card which he said had similar performance to the GTX295.

Is this correct? I badly want the dealer to give me a GTX570 card.

It is not correct see this comparison, among many: GeForce GTX 295 vs GeForce GTX 560 Ti – Performance Comparison Benchmarks @ Hardware Compare

NTW, the 570 would be better that the 295, Go for the 570....

I'm very happy now.
