Help to do same things in WMP12 I used to do in WMP10

The WMP UI that comes with Win7 seems a lot different than the WMP that came with WinXP

My initial major problem is simply importing Albums stored on the local HSS of the new Win7 PC

I started putting new Albums on the new PC using similar folder deep heirarchy to what I used on the WinXP PC

Libraries/Music/My Music/EU/Beatles 1962-70/The Beatles 1962-1966/CD1
...... same path/CD2

The 2 pcs are connected by LAN.

When opening WMP it shows most if not all my albums on the old PC across the LAN, and INITIALLY shows all tracks from the CD1 & CD2 on the local HDD.
But on subsequent days, it only shows the music on the remote pc. (can play them only by clking on them in Explorer, they will play in WMP, but arent imported.)

I remember the old WinXP pc sometimes automatically showed new music in WMP without my having to do anything other than store it under a similar My Music subfolder structure, other times had to manually 'Import' it using File>Add to Library>Add Folder ... that always worked, importing all tracks in that folder.

I cannot find any simple dialog like that in the WMP that comes with Win7. Consulting its local Help 'Getting started..' has topic 'Build a media library'... it says WMP looks in Music, Video, Pictures, & Recorded TV by default. "To build your library you can include folders from other locations or external devices. For more info on adding files to Library see 'Add items to WMP Library' " In subtopic 'Monitoring folders' it says WMP automatically searches default folders and updates its media files. 'To add a folder to be monitored by WMP' In WMP Library 2. clk Organise 3. clk Manage libraries, clk Music to open dialog box, 4. clk Add, 5. Find the folder in the list, clk Include folder, clk ok

I follow this and see my current default Library Locations are My Music (C:\Users\i\Music) (Default save location) & My Music (\\MY-WinXP-PC\My Music)

Thinking the problem may be the new WMP doesnt monitor subfolders, I did add the path to CD1 - but no joy - and that would be extrmely unwieldy if users had to Add each new album using the 'Add' monitored folder dialog.

Grateful if someone can tell me why it is not automatically importing new local music.

A second question, the way music collections are shown in WMP12 is a lot different to WMP10 in the initial default view. Does anyone know if I can customise WMP12 to have same music views as in WMP10 ?
ps: currently dont have 24 hr net access, so maybe a day before I can respond

Fuller title: How to make WMP manage multiple 'music collections' with their own unique attribute/tag-sets, completely independant from each other ?

I have large collections of music from different countries, often with no common Attributes between the different collections.

How can I view each of those Collections in WMP uniquely on a per session basis, without any interference from another collection ? Can store each Collection on a different external USB HDD if need be. I just want each Collection to to be uncluttered with the many different Genre & SubGenre types of different Countries. It appears WMP keeps a rich underlying database of 'tags' of all imported music, containing things like Composer, Genre, Year, Artist, Rating etc- all which I FULLY use to categorise music, seems not directly accessible to Users, and keeps a history of user-defined tags not easily deleted so new tag-sets from other Countries are uncluttered by old tag-sets.

Ideally, I would like to access each independant 'music collection' stored in its own root folder, containing all WMP Attributes/tags held local to its location, using a 'clean' vanilla instance of WMP. How can this be done ?
ps: currently dont have 24 hr net access, so maybe a day before I can respond

Just joined 4 days ago, need help on WMP

Hi all,

I joined sevenforums 4 days ago to make 2 posts re. Windows Media Player12, the most urgent of the 2 posts, on problem of the Library importing music only from pc on a LAN, not from Music I stored on the local pc.

I looked around the site to see which was most appropriate for WMP help, and posted in 'Music-pictures-video' as it seemed to have most WMP entries. However, I have had no replies.

Can anyone advise where is the best place to find help on WMP12 or Music Players in general, either on this site, or one more dedicated on managing Music Players ?

I thank you in advance

Ok firstly can you check that your music library includes the folder for your music . open wmp and click organise then select manage libraries, this will enable you to add folders for the music you want
included in the library.

Thanks for your reply. If you look at my original post 4/5 days back, you will see I gave lot more info on the problem, including the 'Monitored folders':
"I follow this and see my current default Library Locations are My Music (C:\Users\i\Music) (Default save location) & My Music (\\MY-WinXP-PC\My Music)"

So as it works as expected importing music from the remote PC, and 'My Music' in both PCs' is supposed to be 'monitored' - why not showing the music I loaded onto the new local PC ? Since original post, I was able to repeat the initial symptoms, be realoading the same album into a diferent folder... again it appeared in WMP just the once. On subsequent openings, no sign of it.
Do you know why MS removed the "File>Add to Library>Add Folder" in the move from WMP10 to WMP12 ?

sory jim no idea, i know how to set up wmp and thats about the extent of it, there is a way to refresh the wmp library i shall have a looksee and see if i can find out how to.

you could try to remove the folders from the library setting under manage library the re-add them to see if this will force a refresh enabling the items to remain showing. bit of a longshot.

Welcome to 7 Forums...........

This may get you started in your search for music players.
http://www.sevenforums.com/music-pictures-video/152704-best-media-players.html

Post back if more help is needed.
THW
Thanks for your reply. As I got no replies in 'music-pictures-video' my much abreviated version above, (which at least got replies) maybe not sufficiently clear judging by your reply.
(I perused your link, which as it said, was just a list of recommended alternate players - not Help Forums on how-to resolve problems)
My need is for a way of easily accessing large collections of MUSIC, using a DATABASE like system, that can organise the music by many, mant Attributes (tags). I surveyed the market many years aback, and found ONLY WMP had a suitable friendly UI that listed music with most of the tags that I sought. None of those in your link came close when it comes to classifying music categories. (your link recommended VLC - I use thatfor near all my videos - but never music. Thought Winamp went overly ugly/bloated after V3). If anyone knows a new, preferably Open Source, nag-free software with at least as rich a set of sortable Attributes as supported by WMP, will consider switching.

WMP tag-features worked near perfectly for me for 8 years under WinXP. It is just the problem of moving to a Win7 PC I need to overcome. Being unable to import music from only a LAN connected pc, not from the local Win7 pc, seems such an serious error, I hope someone has a fix for that. Failing that, a website, that concentrates more on WMP (& perhaps other musucPlayers) problem solving. Ideally, as I am often out of internet coverge, I seek a downloadable 'WMP Troubleshooter's Guide' that has answers to the 2 issues I posted 5 days back, and answers on other problems users experience when moving to newer versions of WMP, e.g. why did MS remove the 'File>Add to Library' feature, and what is the workaround. Also interested to know the thinking why MS removed the 'Album-Artist' view - which I found my most useful in WMP10.

Accessing your reply from a remote cybercafe long way frm mmy pc as 3g connection down. Thanks, will try our suggestion when I get back; meanwhile, i nm yrush I did a silly thing: Help ! In effort to diagnose cause of the above problem, as I never use WMP only for Music (use other Apps for Pictures, Video) today I thought to stop its list of unused list of Monitored locations and did a Manage Libraries>Pictures>Remove Libraries. To my horror it has deleted all my pictures from the HDD ! As I am used to WMP behaviour Asking if you want to delete from Library only or HDD also, I wasn't expecting this. May be surprising but I have never been caught out like this before. It deleted even the My Pictures and Public Pictures folders. It is not in the Recycle Bin. Is there an easy Restore Deleted folder/file cmd ?

Just a recommendation... Jaangle.

(also supports FLAC, and FLAC tags, and album/artist art, and album review/tracklist, and 12 different sort/presentation sequence modes and multiple "styles", and sortable tag columns, and built-in player with 3-band EQ, and creation of M3U playlists, etc., etc.)

See this post.

Also, I had an extensive ongoing discussion on another thread, where the interactions regarding Jaangle (and MP3Tag) pretty much constituted a tutorial on how Jaangle can be used and customized.

So for much more instruction on installation and use of Jaangle, read this other thread.

your going to have to use a recovery software like recuva and do it fast before you do anything else with your computer to give yourself a chance of getting the pics back.
Recuva - Undelete, Unerase, File and Disk Recovery - Free Download
also if you go to options in wmp and click the library tab then uncheck the delete files from computer when deleted from library ,this will save you stress in the future.

On subject of this original post - how to get it to Import from the local 'My Music':

Shortly after 'experimenting' by what I thought was just stopping WMP from MONITORING media types I didnt want it to involve itself with, I then did a similar thing by removing the monitored location on the remote PC - ensuring the remote PC was switched off beforehand ! The UI process was instant, and I thought to restart WMP for fresh start. But after 'closing' it took several minutes before its icon in the taskbar stopped flashing. When that had completed, I reopened WMP and surprise surprise, my local Music became visible !!!

I conclude from this, WMP has a conflict when 'My Music' is Added to Monitored locations, from a local, and a remote PC. Is this right ? I read in the initial descriptions of WMP12 that it COULD handle Music from remote PCs. When setting up the new Win7 PC, rather than copy my music over from the old WinXP pc, I just set it to Monitor the remote 'My Music' - which seemed to collect 90+% of that collection (not sure why it missed a small %). Seem to remember by default WMP12 already had the local 'My Music' folder in its list of Monitored locations. Certainly no conflict in the 'Monitor Locations dialog/folder.. remote pc had correct lan prefix

As pointed out in my 3rd post under 'General discussion' (as after 4 days, no replies to initial 2 posts posted in Music...), my other initial post on same date/time, was asking HOW can one maintain totally independant Music Collections in WMP (V10 or 12) that dont cross-mix each others Attributes/tags,eg Genres/Subgenres, Composers. i.e keep ALL Collections specific Attrigute/tag data - WITH each Music Collection it belongs to, where WMP (or anything in the host OS) remains vanilla pure, and able to work with each User Defined tag-set on a per-session basis.

Has anyone got any suggestions to achieving this ?

Thanks in advance. btw, this is the 1st day in 2 weeks, have been able to use my 3G net provider, so not sure yet, if able to quickly monitor responses.

Mediamonkey offers the best database management system for music that I have seen and is extremely flexible.

The free version has most of the functions you could need and is capable of handling 10's of Thousands of files with all metadata tags available, the gold (paid) version adds gloss to the system but is not really required, (you'll need a free lame encoder for ripping due to licencing restrictions)

RE independant music collections, not sure if this is what you mean ,but i have a music collection and so does my wife ,the best solution for us to keep the collections separate was to have a media player each, my wife uses media monkey and i used wmp for a while ,i got fed up with wmp taking ages to load and with rthe constant not responding i gave up with it and i use winamp. how i do it now is i have a music folder and i select from there what i want to play and it opens in winamp. my wife has a smaller collection so opens media monkey and selects her music from there (it is set to monitor her music folder)
i guess if you want to use wmp but keep collections independant is to keep one of the music collections separate and dont add it to the music library, this may mean not having it in the my music default music folder. there is a setting in wmp to " not " add a file to the library when played in wmp. hope this helps and doesnt further frustrate you.

Independent libraries in WMP on win7 are designed to utilise the user accounts system - Each user should create their own library on their login and organise as they wish.

This works with systems where the users are sharing the same machine or are on separate systems on the network, with the libraries appearing in the library view if this is allowed by the user (set on the media sharing dialog)
