The 4 hours installation time sounds excessive. There must have been another problem (maybe updates?). The pentium should be very capable to run Win7. I have seen it run on lesser CPUs (take all the netbooks with their single core 1.6GHz Atom processors as an example).

The upgrade may help a little, but the key is the speed of the disk. If you can afford it, add a 60GB SSD to the box - just for the OS. That will speed thing up significantly. You are looking at around $100 for the SSD.

At work I managed to get win 7 enterprise x86 working with Pentium D with 512mb ram. It was just experiment but the surprise was that W7 worked better than win XP pro almost in every aspect. So I leave it with w7. :)
With one of my colleagues tried that trick to one AMD based machine with 1GB ram but with one core processor at 1.6Ghz - it was fail. I meant, it wasn`t fast as that pentium pc.
Apparently win 7 work well with fast cpu/small ram but is not so good with weak cpu/ more ram. :)
At least for us ;)

I agree with WHS--It might have been the updates. Windows 7 Pro took about 15-20 minutes to install on this machine then the updates started. About an hour or so later it was smokin' fast. 22 second boots and 8 second shut downs.

Built my first computer (8Mhz 8088cpu, 640K RAM, 20MB HDD, 2 360K floppy drives) in 1985 and have been building them for myself, relatives and friends ever since.
I installed windows 7 32 on a Dimension 9150, Pentium D, 2GB RAM, works fine but rather slow.

It also depends on what other devices such as graphics or sound cards you have fitted as they all use system RAM to some degree. Also depends if you are doing an upgrade or clean install. Seekmeister has got it right with the minimum specs, you would be better getting a RAM upgrade to at least minimum spec and your system should be fine. One of my machines is running windows 7 32 bit pro using an old Athlon 2300 processor with 2 gigs RAM.

The answer is definitely YES!:) I am running a 2.8 GHz Pentium D LGA 775 with Windows 7 Home Premium 32bit and have been for the past 3 years. The install only took 3 hours but, Win 7 spent the next few days after I installed updating to accommodate it fully. That was when I was running 2 GB DDR2 PC2-4200 I now currently run 4 GB (3.50 GB useable) DDR2 PC2-5300 6700 MHz. It runs smooth and it is not too slow. The speed my PC runs at is respectable but I am looking to replace the 2.8 GHz D with a 3.2. Then my system would really honestly be maxed out. Unless I want to switch to the 64bit disk that came in box with 32 bit. Then it would recognize and possibly use all 4 GB of RAM.
