Has anyone noticed RAM prices lately?
It's dirt cheap.
I looked at my Newegg buying history from two years ago and I bought my current 4GB of RAM for $79.99.


Today it goes for.......$31.99

My mobo says the same, but I'm curious of what would actually happen if I installed 32GB of ram. I'm really curious if the mobo would even post.

Well it states in the manual for my mobo that a bios update will be released when 8gb sticks are available.

It's a stupid amount of ram to have for a regular pc, but hey if it supports it....

I was just checking prices and am ready to buy. Just need to decide which brand. Crucial, Kingston, GSkill, etc. So many choices, such low prices .

Yea, RAM has been getting cheap, a pair of two 4GB sticks at 1600MHz are at $50 USD. All I need is some money and I have more breathing room on my RAM.

Just remember guys, that for many people anything more than 4GB just lays to waste. Even when it's cheap, it's money. Of course, if you have a desire to run lots of virtual machines and build a sweet lab....better consider 16,32 or even 64GB of RAM.

I read an article last summer where it was predicted falling ram prices through 2011 and they were right. I thought I posted a link on here but cant find the post. With PC sales predicted to be on the down slope for a while I see ram prices remaining low for a while. When Bulldoser is released I may get a new system but since it supports DDR3 1866 I need to shop around. All I can find is CL9 so hopefully they will improve and maybe get back to CL6 which is what I have on my DDR3 1333.

RAM prices are typically cyclical, so whenever they dip down again, I look at all my systems and price out upgrades. We're always one Taiwanese earthquake away from RAM shortages and higher memory costs.

This is the price of RAM from a shop I go to in Malaysia.

Apacer/Kingston/Kingmax PC1333:
2GB = RM38 (about USD12.25/GBP7.60)
4GB = RM68 (about USD22/GBP13.6)

I must agree, RAM pricing is low at the moment. But, it is somewhat "seasonal". Out of the blues, the semiconductor industry will make an announcement that there isn't enough supply of silicon and raw materials to meet the world's demands. And ***KABOOM***, the price of RAM and semiconductor memory devices will just shoot up.

My general advice to anyone getting a new PC - if you can stretch your budget a little, just get yourselves the extra RAM now. Here are my reasons:

1. Getting the extra RAM now will mean that you do not have to worry about RAM module compatibility issues in the future, i.e. if you decide to get less memory now, and later (in a year or two) decide to upgrade by adding more RAM, you would need to ensure that the RAM is of the same type, preferably the same model by the same manufacturer
2. The same type of RAM today (e.g. DDR3) could be more expensive in 2-3 years time, because there would likely be advancements in memory technology, resulting in the current memory technology of today to be somewhat obsolete. The demand could drop for the current memory technology, resulting in memory manufacturers to produce lesser of the "older generation" RAM. And it is a simple supply/demand principle - you have to pay more for what is not in abundance in the market. I am saying this from experience because about a year ago, I wanted to upgrade the RAM on my old PC which used DDR1 PC400 (now that is ancient today). I had to pay premium prices for DDR1 - 1GB of DDR1 was RM110 (about USD35). Anyhow, all of that said, if you can afford it, you would possibly end up buying a new PC every 3-4 years - and so, the RAM woes would not apply in this case.
3. The need for more RAM is always rising, given OS/application architectures, especially for gaming and CGI related apps. Leave aside minimum memory requirement (which is always the bare minimum to get an app or OS just about running). For optimum performance, I would say that 4GB is today's minimum for the running of PC's/laptops smoothly. But in 2-3 years time, I would be inclined to say that this minimum for smooth/efficient running of PC OS/apps could increase to 8GB (this is speculation - but I am making this statement based on the trends of memory requirements). NOTE: All of this only apply to OS and apps with 64-bit capability. 32-bit OS/apps would not be able to utilise anything more than 4GB of RAM.

No, because in 5+ years, who knows what type of memory that computer will use. I wouldn't by any now unless your current system needs an upgrade, or you are planning to build a new system within a few months time.
