Solved Search Function Way Too Basic!

BTW the filter DLL may be called anything, (the iFilter DLL above is two words not a filename;) ), the built-in filter for most standard files is called "Query.dll"
sorry - yeah, just testing you're awake lol! :o

Yes, there's a Query.dll

Search still not working. I'll try tomorrow after rebooting and let you know. It's still making busy noises for now...

thanks again

Two important things to remember: first, Start Menu > Search only searches the indexed locations, whereas Explorer > Search also searches non-indexed locations. And secondly, Explorer > Search only searches current folder and its subfolders, i.e. when searching from Explorer window in C:\Users, it can find files and folders in C:\Users\Kari\Documents but not in C:\ or C:\Documents.

Just to test, I tried with three Finnish words I knew would not be in any file or folder name but could be found in one document of mine:

Thanks a lot Kari,

I read the link you gave me, as I did indeed do the search from C:\Users\me\Documents so it should have worked.

The page also indicates that everything should be working from the current settings, so I am going for the total Rebuild.

I'll leave it a few hours and come back.

Wish me luck! :geek:

OK - that didn't work! :( (for want of a polite phrase).

A rebuild of the indexing and search function does not result in me being able to find the many pdfs with any popular keywords in except for the title.

I don't get what I did wrong.

And will someone explain why I can't have "text search" next to pdfs in Advanced settings please?

instead of it saying "Registered iFilter is not found"

I am certain it is limited to .PDFs only, because when I did a search for a popular word for .doc I got 1,110 results, and only a handfull were in the title.

So the problem is almost certainly the PDFs.

The page Kari gave me said "If you are using a 64-bit version of Windows 7, you cannot use a 32-bit IFilter."

So why can't I use a 64 bit iFilter?

Also, Barman58 said check if iFilter in the right place, but I still don't understand fully how to do this.

thanks

If you are receiving the "Registered iFilter is not found" message it indicates that you have a failed install of a 3rd party iFilter, I assume this is the 32bit on a 64 bit system issue.

I went through the exercise of loading the available adobe ifilter on my own 64 bit system and received the same error

------

You can use a 64 bit iFilter but as far as I know the only ones available are not free Adobe now show this as available

Adobe - Acrobat : For Windows : Adobe PDF iFilter 9 for 64-bit platforms

you could try this one and see if this will work. - I am currently in the process of doing this myself :)

If not you should have an uninstall option in the control panel for this and / or your current installed ifilter, removing this will revert to showing the text search option in the Indexing options, which may give you some access to contents but not at the level of specific filters.

--------

The free iFilter explorer will show you where the actual .dll is located for manual removal but this would also require changes to the registry entry, this would need some research to find

Update to install of 64Bit iFilter

Ifilter has installed without issue and now shows "PDF Filter" in the indexing options - system is now performing complete re-index so will not have result for some time ..... system is on 24/7 so should be fairly quick although as the system is actually in use a lot this will still take a while :)

The indexing process can take a looooong time unfortunately, especially as now it will need to open and index the full contents of every .PDF file in the Indexed locations, and it will pause indexing whenever it discovers any user activity

Well it says it's finished indexing.

And I still only 15 pdfs with the word in the title only.

Can I call Microsoft for free as I only bought the PC in Feb this year, and it's still under warrantee?

Or will it cost an arm and a leg?

thanks

I've just tried mine and it's working quite well, so it can work

As for contacting Microsoft, I doubt that they will provide any one to one help for anything like free, it's normal to provide a limb just as a deposit

I can't see any reason why it's not working for you as, as far as I can see, you have everything set-up the same as I do.

The only thing I can suggest is that you have a look at the adobe forums as they supply the filter, (Another reason why you would not get help from MS as they will blame Adobe), maybe someone there has a similar issue.

The problem is that this issue could be caused by some other software that you have installed or not installed, and unfortunately the only way to tie this down is often to find some reference to the issue which mentions some software you also have installed.

You could try removing all trace of the iFilters and see if the STD text filter will work or even re-installing the filter

Adobe (just to be different ), place the iFilter in it's own folder with a lot of other "stuff" there is a read.me file with some info in that you may want to have a look at

on my system this is in ...

C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe PDF iFilter 9 for 64-bit platforms\.....

I would have to assume it does the same for the 32bit

Ifilter explorer that I linked to earlier in this thread will give you definitive information on your system

Just came across this old post ....

http://www.sevenforums.com/general-...ent-indexing-not-working-64-bit-ifilters.html

If the files you are trying to index are from an older system or have been around awhile it may be worth while re-setting the files properties to give your actual username full rights - may be nothing but worth a try.
thanks Nigel for that,

I don't know how to set the file properties but if you mean I should do this inside each individual file, it will not be worth it as there are thousands of them. I have seven years worth of work on my hard drive!

Do you know if there is a way of setting security properties for all pdfs?

If not, I will try asking the guy in that thread via PM.

thanks again

PS also I just did a test for a pdf I downloaded last week, and it did not show up, so it's not just the old stuff; it's all pdf content.

OK thanks a lot Nigel,

I am joining the Adobe forum first to see if they have additional info.

As it suggests doing a system restore before doing the security changes, it looks like things could go wrong, so I want to be fully prepared.

cheers

Hi,

OK I posted on the Adobe forum and no replies, but then the other Qs seem to take at least a few days to get a response.

In the meantime, the other thing you suggested Nigel, was this link:

http://www.sevenforums.com/general-...ent-indexing-not-working-64-bit-ifilters.html

And JayCee who had a very similar problem said:
"If I copy the files from a data disk to the current system disk then they are indexed. I haven't investigated further because I currently have plenty of space on my system disk, and these files aren't my primary copy and can stay on the system disk. So, I imagine this was a problem with security... "

So what is the System Disk? And where is it please?

thanks
