Spam is being sent from my e-mail address

This last bit of information is the bad news, and that is: sometimes your account is hacked by someone stealing your account information, and they use it from a totally separate location to send out the infected emails. So, since the problem isn't connected with your system, there is nothing you can do on your system to change it. And even changing your email wouldn't help because the hacker can still continue to send out infected emails from their location, still using your old email address. The only way you might possibly be able to control it might be if there was some way to actually invalidate your email account's address. And even then, it may be possible for those phony emails to continue to go out.
That is correct and is why I say that cleaning you system may not solve the problem--but in might. My son-in-law had a problem with emails being sent from his system. He ran malwarebytes and it corrected the problem. My grandson had the same problem and there was no way he could fix it. It eventually stopped. So certainly run scans to clean your system--it's very important. But once you have the problem, cleaning your system may or may not solve the problem. Again, to make myself clear, run scans on a regular basis to find and remove malware.

For an online type email account I'm pretty sure if you make it so they can't again get in to your email account they can't keep sending spam. Changing the password should accomplish this.

But, the problem sometimes is that they already have everything they( the hackers) need on their computer and everything is sent from their computer. Therefore no matter what you do to your system is not relevant.

EXACTLY! That's what makes the situation so horrible --- because we are helpless to do one thing to stop the emails --- and our contacts continue to believe the emails are coming from us. That's why I have deleted my whole Address Book/Contact List in my personal email --- but unfortunately, I can't do that in my business email.
