Solved Stop Spindown of USB HDD

Hi all,

I recently had to transfer my main data to another USB drive because of problems with the original. Unfortunately this drive spins down when inactive which is annoying to say the least. Is there any way to stop this?

The drive is a Samsung HD154UI USB device housed in an Iomega enclosure.

Have you tried looking under advanced power options and change turn hard disk off to never.

Thought as much, how about the usb suspend settings, just a thought

Perhaps another way would be to create a scheduled task that writes then deletes a text file to the external hard drive every couple of minutes or so, although I'm not sure how you do it.

Thanks all. NoSleepHD works nicely. You have to run it as administrator if you use the root folder otherwise you get an access exception when it tries to delete its temp file. I think I will end up writing a VB script to do the same so that I can use the scheduler and just forget about it.

Just a caution you probably already know: these things are not designed to run 24/7, otherwise they'd give you the option to not spin-down. So the drive is likely to run hotter-than-desirable in that enclosure, thereby shortening its life.

You'll want to schedule it so it's only spun-up while you are logged-on or something perhaps.

I have now written a quick and nasty VB Script that alternates between creating and deleting an empty text file. Scheduled to start at logon and repeat every 5 minutes. Seems to be working OK.
