Have an odd problem and am hopng someone can help. I have two pc's- one a W7 the other is a xp. I have two streamers: Boxee Box and Pop Corn Hour. Through various trial/error I have determined I can't access the workgroup from both the w7 and xp on either streamer. In other words, both streamers should be able to access workgroup on my network and neither can. I have tried resetting the router, both pc's, streamers etc. All files/folders set to share. I am not an expert but it seems since both streamers can't access my workgroup, the problem might be with windows. Any ideas/suggestions?

Thank you

Hi

Can your Win7 and XP PC's access shared folders on each others PC? Have you tried the streamers with the firewalls switched off?

Hi, Thxs for reply. No, my w7 and XP can't access shared folders on each others PC. And yes, firewall is off. this has been driving me crazy all weekend and I found that perhaps my w7 machine is no longer the master browser. This and the info. about how/why etc is way above my head. I simply want to access my SMB shares over my network. Any suggestions? Thxs!!

Okay, lets get the PC's talking to each other and sharing files first then we'll sort out the streaming :)

With different versions of windows, you have to use Workgroups to share files.

  • On the Win 7 PC, this will require you to create a 'Work' network (Not Home);
  • Next make sure that both PC's have the same Workgroup name;
  • Create a user with the same name and password on both PC's;
  • Within Network and Sharing Center/Advanced sharing settings, ensure that you have these settings:
    • Turn on Network Discovery
    • Turn on File and printer sharing
    • Enable file sharing for devices that use 40-56 bit encryption
    • Turn on sharing so anyone with network access can read and write files in the Public Folders
    • Use user accounts and passwords to connect to other computers.
  • Let us know if this allows access to the public folders?

Ok, before I change to a workgroup and try suggestions above will I need to enter a password in every time I navigate to my SMB Shares? Reason I ask is, up until recently my SMB shares where accessible over both streamers and a pass word was not neccessary. Thank you again for your help!

UK Media,

Well- not sure if this is good or bad but I was away for a while today and everything was off-(w7, xp, streamers, etc). Now I can see the PCS on my network and can see the PCH as well. Which this is all good. Problem now is (not sure if I caused this w/all the messing around BUT, under network> (my PC Name)> I now see a ton of files shared. These files have a green looking ribbon on the bottom of the file. I tried to delete these as the same files are already saved on my c drive. However, deleting them leads to this error: I need permission from the administrator??? What, I own this PC and will do what I want to the files. Not sure if the initial problem I had caused this or what is going on but do you know how I can delete these files? Or at the least not share them. Thanks!!

UK Media- Sorry been out a few days. I have tried to post a pic of what I am seeing and am at a loss on how to do it correctly. So, let me try and explain what I see/ and what is going on.

Open Windows Explorer, from this view my libraries open on main page. To the left of this I see the tree which basically is my pc documents, accounts, etc. I navigate to Net Work and here I see the PC's on my network. I open MY PC which is called Jim's PC ( I am the owner). Under this tree is where i see what appears to be network shares. I have three: Users, TV Shows, and Movies. What I don't understand is: I own this PC, its files, etc and when I either try to add to or delete these files I receive an error.... " You are not authorized to perform this function". Something else that I don't understand is under Jim's PC I see three user accounts ; 1) guest, 2)JJ 3) public.

I have sorted out the original problem I had but now these other issues have come up. FWIW, I right click on these network shares and try to enable sharing for everyone, but it just reverts back to: Jim's PC. So, why in the world can't I use these files as I want. Thank you

No, never created a password. Not sure but the JJ seems to be what I called my wmp12 library which shouldn't have anything to do w/ this. All I want/need is full access to ALL my files, folders. At this point I can't add or delete from the "network tree" Jim's PC. I am at a loss. Thank you

Hi 64met

Have you set the sharing permissions within the folder that you are sharing?
  • Right click on the folder you want to share;
  • Select Share With/Advanced Sharing;
  • Click on Permissions;
  • Select Everyone and make sure that Full Control is ticked.
Let us know if that works.

Hi UKMedia,

Under everyone I have full control ticked and I also have Change and Read ticked. What else I see but have not tried is under everyone it gives me an option to ADD. I check this and am given another tree which reads: Select Users or Groups; from this location. Here I see Jim's PC and enter object names to select. I haven't tried anything here as of yet. Anyway, Thank you for your help on this!! Up until a few days ago I never had a problem...... Let me know if there is something else I should try.
