Custom Made Sig and Avatar [6]

Hi Nick,
I'd like to use it to edit photos and to create sigs I think Paint Shop Pro has a curve/pen tool which PSE does not have. And when I want to work on a PSE-created PSD file in GIMP, then GIMP simply ignores layer effects like bevel/emboss, inner/outer glows etc. I mostly use GIMP because it has a curve tool; but then I usually have to work with two sets of PSD layers just for one sig.

I've done a lot of reading on the enormous suites like Photoshop CS and Corel Draw Graphics Suite X5, and they seem to have too many functions, several of which I'll probably never use...besides the fact that they're very expensive.
Student versions (over here, at least) tend to be rather watered down - so what's the use of a full-fledged watered-down version? ))

Briefly...I'm searching for a rough equivalent of PSE with a curve tool :-D

Well if it's photo editing and sig creation that you want to do then stick with Gimp.
All programs will loose some of the layer effects when saved in their native format and imported into another program, that's why we merge layers down or flatten images to preserve these effects.
You should be working with multiple layers so I wouldn't worry about having more than one layer in Gimp for your sig designs.
As for Student versions being "watered down" well this isn't true. They don't make a different version of the software just for students, it's still the full version but at a cheaper price.

I'm no expert but Gimp has done the job for me so far.

I have just started using Gimp 2.7.3 (Still in dev stage) because it has the 'Single Window Mode' - I like it a lot

Thanks Nick Well, the most sensible thing I can do is download a trial version of Paint Shop Pro onto the other computer and see what it's like. GIMP is a nice program (I still have to get used to the interface), but it does not have a shape tool or bevel/emboss options like in PSE

Good idea Athene, trials are a full version usually so you may see what you have. You never know, some feature you've not considered may be a thought provoker.

As for Gimp, I had it for awhile and was confused by 3 windows opening. I never could get an image to open, much less create one.

2.7.x is the development build leading up to 2.8 which has been in the pipeline for some time but hopefully with it now having the Single Window Mode and so far it has been stable for me... this can only be a good sign that they are nearly there

What do you mean by a shape tool ?
Also you can use pluggins to create bevel/emboss effects in Gimp

What do you mean by a shape tool ?
Also you can use pluggins to create bevel/emboss effects in Gimp

Gimp pluggins

A shape tool to create stuff like rectangular shapes with rounded corners, or triangles, or birds...You name it PSE has a nice selection of shapes.

Just use Arial bold and regular in the right size and make any logo you need. Resize the flags to keep the most resolution.
