Win 7 Boot Disk

Hi All

Question for you. Having computer problems as some of you know and I have been hunting up a Win 7 Boot Disk as some have suggested. But to no avail.

Well I contacted BEST BUY today to see if they sell them and based on what I have read here and other sites the tech agents reply was very strange.

My understanding is ANYONE with the same Windows version can make me a BOOT DISK regardless of what computer company made the computer. So like I am on a Dell but someone on an HP could make me a disk providing same windows version.

But when I talked to the agent he first said they only sell the whole operating system disks and that BOOT DISKS would have to be obtained in my case through Dell as has to have the items on it that Dell has for my specific system.

Now my understanding is this is wrong info.

Am I right in thinking this or is he correct that I would have to obtain via Dell and no one else could make me a boot disk.

Based on what I have read here I feel he is wrong in how he responded to me!!

So whose correct?

Basically the diagnostics said my drives fine I just can't get it to boot stops mid way with aq black screen and flashing cursor but being everything passed the test folks here have said most likely the drive itself is fine then so was hoping this disk my get me by this issue at least letting me back up and then maybe restoring the drive after back up!!!

May be an OEM disk made for HP may not work for you.

It happened to me once. I tried a Compaq Win XP OS installation CD (Not a Recovery Disk) on my office IBM thinkcenter desktop. The setup program specifically told me that this particular setup CD is meant for Compaq only and the setup has aborted. Some of the manufacturers make a custom made OS installation disks and make sure they do not work in other systems.

If you have a generic OEM DVD then it may work. You may provide your windows 7 key on the Microsoft certificate pasted on your system. If it is not activated automatically, you may have to call Microsoft for telephone activation.

Your best bet would be to get hold of a retail copy of windows which will work on any system. After installation of windows use the same key from your microsoft sticker on your system as explained above.

Afterwards you can go to the Dell site and download any drivers which Windows 7 has not natively installed.
