Solved Subtitles blink in mkv files and some .mkv thumbnails aren't displayed

Hello! I've downloaded a codec pack so I could watch anime with subtitles in .mkv formats and so I could have thumbnails in those matroska files too, but some .mkv have thumbnails and some other don't xD It's very odd xD

Also when im watching an opening the subtitles start to flash xD very quickly and it's very annoying , sometimes they flash very slowly so it's even more annoying


I'd really appreciate it if you help me xD

Hello senjougahara and welcome to the forums

Matroska is a funny format that isn't very widely supported at the moment, it's known to cause all sort of problems - I think it's great, but I too have the thumbnail issue. This is probably due to the files being encoded differently

Firstly I would like you to uninstall any codec pack that you currently have.

Then I would like you to install the K-Lite Mega Codec Pack:

K-Lite Mega Codec Pack

1. Go to: Free-Codecs.com :: Download K-Lite Mega Codec Pack 7.2.0 : The K-Lite Mega Codec Pack includes the K-Lite Codec Pack Full, QuickTime Alternative, Real Alternative support and Monkey's Audio DirectShow decoder.
2. Scroll down to find the link that will "Download [ K-Lite Mega Codec Pack X.X.X ]" where the X.X.X will be the version number
*If the link doesn't work then choose one of the links with "MIRROR" written next to it*
3. Click on it and save the file to your documents
4. When it finishes downloading, find the file and run it

Now we have to install the program:

1. Click Next
2. Check "Advanced Install" and click Next
3. Click Next
4. On the drop down menu, select "Profile 8: Lots of stuff (without player)" and click Next
5. Click Next
6. Click Next
7. Check the "Windows Media Player" box and click Next
8. Check both of the boxes:
-"Video file extensions:"
-"Audio file extensions:"
and click Next
9. Click "Select All" and click Next
10. Click Next
11. Click Install

If it asks about removing broken codecs, allow it to do so

Once you've done this, reboot and see if the problem remains

How do I manage a movie with subtitles .....
I just leave it to VLC media player . Then it is just to go to the menus : Video > Subtitle track .


If the subtitle is not embedded with the movie but a separate .srt file, the "open file" option there works nicely

The codec I was already using K-Lite , I didn't mention it because my friend told me it had something to do with piracy and it was nameless in some forums



Have you got any other solution? (I have installed both K-Lite 7.20 and K-Lite 64bits)

The user was looking for a solution, not just to experience the same problems as you.


The Real Solution for trouble free playback in the Windows players

1st, get rid of Klite.
Install the Shark007 Win7codecs and the x64Components addon and your problems will actually be solved instead of just having the same problems as Tom.

After installation Open the 32bit Settings Application using a rightclick on the shortcut and select 'Run as Administrator', go to the H264 TAB and click on LAV codec - Do the same in the 64bit App but also use the button on the Help TAB to associate filetypes to the Windows players.

You'll have perfect playback in the Windows players, and perfect thumbnails in Windows Explorer

Hmmm, no wonder I didn't understand...I've always hated smiley faces. I agree with the definition's comment regarding the annoyance factor.

KLite is completely free . Nobody pirates a free stuff !

Yes I agree that VLC looks bad compared with WMP, but it makes life easy, and performs better .

If you want to stick with WMP, I'd suggest you to use Shark007.net - Windows 7 Codecs - WMP12 Codecs . The developer is also a member of this forums ... and in his page there is a forum where you can discuss your problems with his codecs .

I meant in comparison to other video formats - I think it's safe to say that WMV is a much wider supported format

Again, same about the comparison. I know everything has it's faults, but something that is less supported is bound to have more playback issues

Firstly, I assumed that I was doing something wrong concerning the lack of thumbnails and that the issue wouldn't be a problem with him. Would I really recommend that someone does something that I think is wrong? I think not.

I'm no expert, but to me it sounded as if it's a broken codec so I was simply trying to establish whether this could be the case. If it fixes it then great, if it doesn't then I'll know for future reference - after all I (and most of the others here) are here to help and to learn - what's the point of being here if we don't contribute?

SPlayer is a nice player for HD res .avi .mp4 .mkv. Unfortunately it doesn't support PGS subs like VLC does. But it's very stable. It does support .srt and idx/sub. Also has built in subtitle search.

WMP12 also supports PGS subs. Trouble with VLC as soon as I touch it, it goes away. It was super stable until version 1.0, as counter-intuitive as that seems. xD

Thanks a lot for the links Shark007, I've downloaded them and installed them and configured them just as how you told me, the subtitles are working alright know (I've tried an episode and they were functioning like they should ) But the thumbnails, the problem persists here I got you a picture

For the Thumbs, On the H264 TAB of the 64bit app, set 'Use FFDshow's codec'
If the file is somewhat incomplete or damaged, using Metafox from my Tools page may fix it.

I used Metafox and it fixed! That's wonderful, thanks a lot , but I'll have to do that with every file that I download that has no thumbnails or it already fixed the problem on my computer?

If Metafox fixed it, the problem exists with the file(s) itself, not your system.
