Windows 7 permanently logs on as tempory user

I turned my laptop on, to find all my files were gone. At first i thought I had a virus, so i scanned my computer, when this failed to bring anything to light i carried out a system restore. This didnt work, so I went it to my computer and noticed there were 3 folders, two along the lines of .temp (will have to post more detail if required) and one that was my account name. I clicked on my account name and found all my files, however i dont understand why my laptop keeps loading this tempory file. The two files ".temp" cant be deleted as im logged on as that account and when i log off, and click on my singular user account to log on, it loads the same tempry profile.

Any help would be much appreciated.

On my experience, this usually happens when NTUSER.DAT is missing/corrupted from your user folder. This file contains all user registry (HKCU) that is basically required to make everything work.

Is the file in your folder, by any chance? Make sure you http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/394-hidden-files-folders-show-hide.html

hello Arkhi, just wrote a massive message and clicked post and it didnt post :/ FAIL! however i did what u said regarding making folders visible, however im struggling to understand the HKCU and NT user thing. Ibe gone on regedit and found a folder called NT USer is that the right path?

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Advanced

Is the exact path you should be on. If you open up regedit fresh you will see your hives. "HKCU" stands for Hkey_Current_User. That should be what you open first then find software, microsoft... etc etc.

Hello Derekimo,

I followed your link and rebooted my computer in safe mode as i only have/had one user account. I opened regedit and followed my normal path "as i said in earlier post" however when i booted in safe mode it gave me a lot more drop down menus under NT USER, I can now see a profile list drop down with 5 entrys these are listed below,

> S-1-5-18
> S-1-5-19
> S-1-5-20
> S-1-5-21- ...............
> S-1-5-21 - ...............bak

The bottom two seem to be linked to my account, as when i open the profile image path the 4th in the lsit says C:\Users\Temp.Matthew-PC.001

and the last in the list the one that ends in .bak says C:\Users\Temp.Matthew

Well it depends on which one you are doing. The two tutorials do different things. Arkhi's tutorial shows you how to show hidden files to find out if you have the file NTUSER.DAT or if it's corrupted.

Dereks tutorial shows you how to possibly fix the problem which would involve you deleting an account but if you save it there should be no problems.

In the second picture, follow Arkhi's guide so that your hidden files are visible and look for the NTUSER.DAT file.

In the last picture, the two long numbers (S-1-5-21........ and S-1-5-21........ .bak) are the ones you want to be working with in Dereks tutorial. Follow the tutorials step by step and once you have finished, come back with the results.

I did both tasks, the first recomended by Arkhi was unsuccesfull as i could not find the NTUSER.DAT file

I then moved on to DEREKs tutorial backing up the two sid files n then deleting them, but found that i still had the same issue.

I then tried system restore but the closest back up i had, was after the issue started.

So finally i created a new user account, deleted the temp account from users and im going to see how i get on, but at least im not being logged on as a tempory user. thanks for all your help

i could not find the NTUSER.DAT file

Uncheck "Hide Protected Operatiing System files" in the folder options too.

If you can't find it, then in my opinion, your profile is lost for good. See, without that file, the registry for your user account is gone. This registry is required to make virtually any program work.

I would try http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/85679-previous-versions-restore-files-folders.html to see if you can find a backup of that file.

Basically, you right click your user folder->Restore previous version->And see if you can find a date where your computer was still working.

If everything else suggested here fails, just create a new profile and move all your files there
