I'm not a computer techie but I can usually follow instructions when troubleshooting. But I can't seem to find out how to fix this BSOD.

About three weeks ago I had my first SSE and received the "Technical Information" number of: ***STOP: 0x0000003B (0x000000001D, 0xFFFFF8800000000, 0xFFFFF88003EBD150, 0x000000000000000).

The BSOD's have occured in regular mode and in Safe Mode. There was also a period of two weeks where there were no errors at all. There have been zero hardware changes in the past 6 months. I did upgrade from Vista to W7 and I increased my HDD from 320 to 500GB.

I am using an HP dv5 that I have had for around 3 years. It's a Core Two Duo and I have had it to near capacity recently and the moved a bunch of music, photo's, video's to an external HD.

The most recent software installations was about three months ago. I was using some audio editing software (Adobe Audition 1.5 and then later installed Cubase LE5). Both of these have worked fine but now they both hang up if I'm trying to use one or the other.

Yesterday I was able to use the Adobe program for more than an hour. When I finished my mix I shut it down, only it wouldn't shut down. I used all the tricks (okay, Task Manager, right-click and close) to close it but to no avail. I powered down and then a couple of minutes later I restarted it. Boom... BSOD. About ten minutes ago I attempted to open Cubase. It would not get past the "initiating BAIOS" phase and is doing the same as Audition yesterday by not being able to shut it down.

Now, an additional new change is my battery. As I stated above, the laptop is around 3 years old. Same battery. In my system icon tray there has recently been an "x" over the battery. It will tell me it's full but tells me to consider replacing it. I will do that when I return to the US in about two more weeks. Could this have anything to do with the BSOD?

I have noticed that programs have recently begun taking longer to shut down. I have done a Windows Memory Check and a scannow and all came back okay.

I have run the Dump program and will upload it here. I could not get the Health Check to produce anything for me. It ran and ran but I received nothing from it.

Any help, any guidance, any instruction will be most graciously appreciated. I've got another two weeks to go in Nigeria and I need my laptop for when I'm not at my desk computer.

Cheers all,

Rod

Hi :)

You need to update these old drivers,

Code:
HpqKbFiltr.sys 19-Jun-07 1:13:11 πμ

enecir.sys 04-Sep-08 12:47:58 μμ
agrsm64.sys 22-Nov-08 1:05:20 πμ

Rt64win7.sys 26-Feb-09 12:04:13 μμ
RTSTOR64.SYS 26-Mar-09 11:00:14 πμ
GEARAspiWDM.sys 18-May-09 3:17:04 μμ

I have checked for the drivers and found most of them, however the first one I was going to enter showed that I already had the most current driver for it (rt64win7); the one with the date you show here is older than what I found.

The next one that I checked already had the most current driver (same date as shown above) as well. Will continue to check the others but so far I haven't been able to make any improvements on the drivers.

The good thing is that I left my laptop on overnight and when I returned to it this morning it not had a BSOD episode...yet.

Went to HP's website and did some Google searching and found most of the drivers but so far none have been newer than what was installed.

So, I ran Auslogics Defrag. It had been running about an hour and a half (very defragmented (20%) due to my moving a lot of data to my external HD about three weeks ago) when I decided to plug my iPhone in to charge. I knew that it could possibly have a negative effect, and it did. Immediate BSOD with the same System error that I've been getting.

I left the phone plugged in, shut down the laptop, then restarted in regular mode. So far have been able to watch my iPhone sync with iTunes and am now running Defrag again.

When I plugged the phone in was there some sort of spike in energy use? Could this go back to something related to my battery being in poor condition?

Just trying to update as things happen. Thanks much.

Completed the defrag (Auslogics) yesterday. Nearly 500 fragmented files. Was able to use Adobe Audition when it finished and when done I shut down the computer. Turned it back on today and a BSOD occured within about two minutes while it was starting up.

A correction to my initial statement about software; I did download and install Google Chrome. Somewhere along the line McAfee was added also. Not sure if that was part of the Google Chrome install or not. I have Norton already so it was not intentional. I have since uninstalled McAfee.

Other recent updates/installations (between September 3 and now; the first BSOD was Sept 25) are:

Quick Time (version 7.70.80.34) Sept 3
iTunes (10.4.1.10) Sept 3
Google Chrome (as mentioned) Sept 4
Mozilla Firefox 6.0.2 (x86 en-US) Sept 14
Malwarebytes 1.51.2.1300 Sept 14
Compatibility Pack for the 2007 Office System Sept 14
Microsoft Office File Validation Add-In Sept 14
Microsoft Office PowerPoint Viewer 2007 (english) Sept 14
Adobe Flash Player 10 Plugin Sept 27
Mozilla Firefox 7.0 (x86 en-US) Oct 6

I am getting different codes (the #'s in parenthesis) from the BSOD; what relevence, if any, does that have? For instance, the 3rd set of numbers in the past two BSOD's were 0xFFFFF880087C0150 and the next was ....880087AC8150.

New dump files attached. I really do appreciate you taking the time to help me on this.

After I ejected my flash stick to move from my laptop back to my work desktop I clicked the balloon that said it was safe to remove the flash stick from the laptop, and got another BSOD. This is in Safe Mode. The code (3rd number) was different again.

Considerations I am thinking are to uninstall Chrome and iTunes (for the time being....need the Tunes but maybe an older version since the one I have now seems to have issues. Another thing about that version of iTunes is that sometimes when it is opened and I go to minimize it the page actually enlarges and the top part of the page seems to disappear. I knew when it first did that that something was wrong but I just now remembered it. I'll back up my current iTunes library, uninstall and then see if I can find an older version (maybe 2 or 3 versions back) to reinstall.

Memtest and sfc/scannow completed

Ran scannow three times and had zero problems found.

Started the Memtest and then left for about 4 and half hours.

Came back, laptop was off.

Does the Memtest shut down the computer when complete?

Where would the results of the test be stored?

Uploaded some diagnostic programs from CPUID yesterday. Also used the laptop last night to watch a movie. No problems. Have restarted it and letting it sit on my desk until the first BSOD appears, then I'll try running the Memtest again.

I have also removed the battery and am running it off direct power.

Have four messages from the Action Center, two of them having to do with my Norton 360 being out of date which I knew. I'm not connected to the internet with it at the moment. The other two issues are maintenance issues: one is regarding setting up a backup and the other is "Address a problem with FFmpeg" which I don't have anymore. Need a good driver cleaner, yes?

The CPUID programs seem to be informative. Just need to understand what I'm looking at since there is so much data.

So far, no BSOD's (30 min). Will start the Memtest though.

Cheers,

Rod

Have run "MemTestx86" overnight and am on the 7th pass or maybe there has already been seven passes (under Pass it says "7") and no errors are shown.

Ran the laptop all day yesterday, until the evening. I had been working with some audio in Adobe Audition on and off all day. Did everything I wanted to do with it. Decided I would start a few file and whammo: BSOD. That's when I restarted with MemTest. Memory is fine. Zero errors. Scannow returns no results. I believe it's some sort of software incompatibility somewhere...just no clue where. Haven't uninstalled iTunes yet but will probably attempt to do so today once the backup is complete.

Would a full reinstallation of Win7 be warranted? I'd like to avoid buying a new laptop although I am hungry for a Mac for my audio editing.

Please see attached. Laptop has been running most of the day but with a few BSOD's. I did update the BIOS from F14 to F21 today, as an FYI.

Thanks much, again.

Used laptop for editing some audio this morning; no problems. Took a small thumb drive and inserted it in to one of the USB hubs and instant BSOD.

Restarted with that thumb drive in and got a "disk read error". Just remembered that when I set up the MemTest I had the BIOS start with the flashdrive... will go change that.

Got back in to Windows, had already inserted the thumb drive during bootup but after an acceptable amount of time, and moved one song to the drive. While moving another I got a BSOD.

Could the port be causing part of the problem? The laptop has 3 USB ports. This one I was using is the primary that I use.

Photo of USB Controller section of Device Manager is attached. For a long time now it has shown this many items. Bear in mind that I do use my laptop for audio recording with a PreSonus interface and also with a Zoom R16, but that has been for several months now.

Just fishing for suggestions.

Thanks much,

Rod

I did manage to find two drivers that were outdated and have updated them but most of what I found at HP's website were older than what was on my system.

Your help has been and continues to be greatly appreciated. Sorry to have been so persistent, but I'm not at home (US) at the moment and have another week to go before I leave Nigeria and through your help I hope I 1) can fix this and 2) learn how to do this for myself, or at the very least just learn something.

Cheers,

Rod

Well, it's been two days now and no BSOD. I haven't tried to intentionally initiate one (by using measures I have documented previously: insert USB based device or try to hang up a program). I'm anticipating it will return.

I did update a couple of drivers though and maybe that helped. I have an HP and used drivers found at their support page. I then checked in my Device Manager after starting the installation of each zip file (driver) and compared the one in the zip file to what I found in DM to see if I could determine which was newer.

Hopefully this helped and helps anybody who has had similar problems and have read this far.
