When I pop in a CD or DVD it doesn't autoplay and it doesn't even show up in the computer section. I know that they are corrupt because I checked the properties when I right clicked the icon in control panel>System>device manager. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling them but it didn't work.

What exactly tells you it is the SATA or IDE controller driver, which is what drives the OD?

Try physically reinstalling the OD, checking connections or changing cabling, cleaning the drive, trying another, updating the firmware which is all that is installed for the OD specifically.

This is exactly what it says: Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)

If this problem just recently started have you tried restoring your machine to an earlier date/time?

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/700-system-restore.html

You could also see if your machine has any damaged or corrupt system files by running a System File Checker scan from an elevated command prompt (Option Two in this tutorial.) If problems are found run the scan two more times, rebooting in between scans.

I tried the system restore a couple of times. Even tried restoring my setting from my online source. Will try the System file checker.

It isn't recognizing me as an administrator. That's another problem I have been having with it. I can not install programs or anything. Getting frustrated here. Should I create another user profile and try it then after making it the administrator?

You can try that. You can also boot the Win7 DVD REpair console (on second screen) or Repair CD to run System Restore and System File Checker from the Command Line on the System Recovery Tools menu: SFC -SCANNOW Run in Command Prompt at Boot

This is exactly what it says: Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)

You get this error message in the Device Manager under which device exactly?

Have you tried updating or reinstalling the driver or the OD itself? To update or reinstall the driver, on Update Driver tab select Update driver then choose Automatically. If this fails choose Uninstall Driver and reboot.

Yes. That is what it says. And I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling it.

Can not do the boot repair disk, because it isn't reading and auto running the CD-Rom. I'm on a laptop, btw. And can not physically remove it

Typing from my iPhone now. It allowed me to boot from my recovery disk. Will attempt to repair it now.

Reboot and tap the F8 key to access Advanced Boot Options to see if the Repair console is on that menu. If so, boot into it and run the repairs as given above.

When and where exactly do you get the error message? I have asked several times here and it still isn't clear. You said you verified the OD drivers are corrupted in Device Manager properties. Where does this message appear there? If it appears elsewhere, where? And what appears in Device Manager exactly which tells you this. We need fuller information to help you since we are not there watching what you're doing.

When did this problem begin? Were you doing anything specific, or were changes made you can recall? How is performance otherwise? You mentioned System Restore is not working. This is a bad sign. Is it turned on at Computer>Properties>Advanced Tools>System Protection? Are there any Restore Points at all?

It shows it when I select the device and then right click on it. I think I will buy the Windows 7 CD and upgrade this laptop. Or take to the local shop here. Thanks for ur help, but I give up. I'm no software specialist.

One other thought that might help. Since your specs indicate you have a Toshiba Satellite, have you checked on the Toshiba website for their latest free drivers/software downloads? Perhaps even a toll-free number for tech support or warranty info?

I also came across this Microsoft "Fix it" article.

I followed the directions there as to how to fix it and it worked. Thanks very much for pointing me there.
