BSOD playing Team Fortress 2/using After Effects cs5.5

Ok it just crashed to blue screen, and at the bottom it says Collecting data for crash dump... But it's been on that for the last five minutes. I waited an additional 20 minutes, and then forced shutdown. Took a little while to get it to reboot successfully, but when it did I went into safe mode w/networking and still no log. I'm really at a loss as to what to do next, I don't have money/resources to try and swap hardware out and see if one of them is the cause, so all I can do is make sure whether or not it is a driver or system file issue. Any useful info in the cbs log?

CBS.log showed quite a few net framework errors that were re-installed. If you are still having problems I would still run a chkdsk with "/F /R" The "F" is for fix. without it nothing gets done

I shall try that right now. I did some memtest passes yesterday(5 to be exact) and no errors found there, so that makes me feel better.

I tried the chkdsk but I think I may have done it wrong after some research. I tried entering "chkdsk /R /F" but I think I should've done /R by itself and THEN /F? This is the message I got:

Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the net time the system restarts y/n"
So I hit yes and rebooted and let it do its thing for a couple hours. But the issues are still here, so I'm curious as to whether or not it worked or I performed it incorrectly. Let me know if I should run these again if I did them wrong.

Another question: would you recommend/adivse against using either Defraggler (Defraggler - Download) or CCleaner? Would they help with this issue?

Don't know if this should be a concern or not, but before and after the reformats, I saved a partition I had that's 75gb (1TB hard drive)with some stock footage on it (I'm a visual fx artist, go figure). Should this be reformatted as well? I also had to install a DVD drive to reformat, and its an Asus drive. I read somewhere Asus sometimes can cause issues, but I installed it AFTER the reformat so who knows.

At the end of chkdsk there should be a short report. I can tell more from that nd I do not advice defragers and certainly not untill you fix the current problem.

Chkdsk found no problems. At some point you may want to start thinking about repair install or clean install.

Well, again I did reformat and re-install windows on my system twice now. How might I go about doing a repair install?

Just did another full, complete re-install on my hard drive, made sure to delete all partitions so everything was fresh. Still no dice, but look at this. This is happening in a few games I've tried. The lag spikes are in a pattern, happening over and over with even spacing between them. Could it be my video card or CPU? And is there a way to test them?

Just got a BSOD finally, instead of just a freeze-up. I attached the minidump as well. I reformatted today and installed the basics: latest versions of flash, java, ATi Catalyst, etc. Any answers?

Related to PalmUSBD.sys USB Driver for Palm OS Handheld Devices from Palm, Inc. I would remove it at least to test.

Now thats odd considering I don't own anything by Palm... I'll try it out now.

EDIT: Just checked my C:/windows/system32/drivers/ folder for it and didn't see it. Would it be located anywhere else? Also just got bsod again testing it out, and this time on the error screen it mentioned a "atdcm64a.sys" file.... Curious.

I deleted usbd.sys and upon rebooting my USB keyboard and mouse no longer work, what do I do from here?

I re-installed, just because I haven't put anything important on my hdd again. Tested a game out again and it ran for about an hour just fine. Then I got BSOD, and THIS time the file it mentioned was a "mouhid.sys". Does that have something to do with my mouse? I have a Logitech MK300 wireless keyboard, and a Logitech G500 USB mouse. I thought maybe updating their drivers would help but I didn't see any on Logitech's website (just some extra apps). I also have two externals, both made by WD. I'm beginning to think it could be an issue soemwhere with USB devices, but I don't see how they could have just started acting up and cause all this?

Yes, Completely cleared all partitions, made a new one, formatted and re-installed. I'm trying to figure out whether or not this is more than a driver/software issue, because the errors are all over the place. The usbd.sys and mouhid.sys could be related I think, but where did that direct x one come from? Really hate for it to be a physical hardware issue like the video card or CPU...

The results from the DMP files do not give a definitive answer. While we investigate further here are a few things that you can do>

1-Run a system file check to verify and repair you system files. You do this by typing cmd in search, then right click and run as admin. SFC/ SCANNOW


2-Event viewer
There are several ways to find what the problem is. The best is to go into event viewer (type eventvwr in search). Go to the windows log>application tab.

You want to look for critical errors (they have red in the left column ).

When you find them you want to look for critical errors that say app hang, app crash, or anything that relates to the problem.

When you find them please note the event ID, and the source codes and tell us what they are.

3-Device manager
Please go to start>search>type device manager. (Win 7 and Vista)
Are there any "unknown devices" with yellow triangles on them?
Is you driver there , listed, and working?

If your driver is missing, or there is a yellow triangle on it, you will need to update it.


4-Driver Verifier

I'd suggest that you first backup your stuff and then make sure you've got access to another computer so you can contact us if problems arise. Then make a System Restore point (so you can restore the system using the Vista/Win7 Startup Repair feature).

In Windows 7 you can make a Startup Repair disk by going to Start....All Programs...Maintenance...Create a System Repair Disc - with Windows Vista you'll have to use your installation disk or the "Repair your computer" option at the top of the Safe Mode menu .

Then, here's the procedure:
- Go to Start and type in "verifier" (without the quotes) and press Enter
- Select "Create custom settings (for code developers)" and click "Next"
- Select "Select individual settings from a full list" and click "Next"
- Select everything EXCEPT FOR "Low Resource Simulation" and click "Next"
- Select "Select driver names from a list" and click "Next"
Then select all drivers NOT provided by Microsoft and click "Next"
- Select "Finish" on the next page.

Reboot the system and wait for it to crash to the Blue Screen. Continue to use your system normally, and if you know what causes the crash, do that repeatedly. The objective here is to get the system to crash because Driver Verifier is stressing the drivers out. If it doesn't crash for you, then let it run for at least 36 hours of continuous operation (an estimate on my part).

If you can't get into Windows because it crashes too soon, try it in Safe Mode.
If you can't get into Safe Mode, try using System Restore from your installation DVD to set the system back to the previous restore point that you created.

Try this free stress test: Free Software - GIMPS

Prime95 Setup:
- extract the contents of the zip file to a location of your choice
- double click on the executable file
- select "Just stress testing"
- select the "Blend" test. If you've already run MemTest overnight you may want to run the "Small FFTs" test instead.
- "Number of torture test threads to run" should equal the number of CPU's times 2 (if you're using hyperthreading).
The easiest way to figure this out is to go to Task Manager...Performance tab - and see the number of boxes under CPU Usage History
Then run the test for 6 to 24 hours - or until you get errors (whichever comes first).
The Test selection box and the stress.txt file describes what components that the program stresses.

Then, if the above tests pass, I'd try these free stress tests:

FurMark Setup:
- If you have more than one GPU, select Multi-GPU during setup
- In the Run mode box, select "Stability Test" and "Log GPU Temperature"
Click "Go" to start the test
- Run the test until the GPU temperature maxes out - or until you start having problems (whichever comes first).
NOTE: Set the alarm to go off at 90ºC. Then watch the system from that point on. If the system doesn't display a temperature, watch it constantly and turn it off at the first sign of video problems. DO NOT leave it it unmonitored, it can DAMAGE your video card!!!
If the temperature gets above 105ºC, quit the test - the video card is overheating.
- Click "Quit" to exit

Got up to the Prime95 test and it froze my computer. Rebooted, tried to go into safe mode and BSOD. Waited a bit, turned my comp back on and got in. No minidump file. Then a few seconds later crash to black. I'm going to leave it alone for a bit, but I'm wondering: what the heck was all that?

I had two yellow triangles in device manager under the USB devices, but all my stuff is working. The other picture is from when I did the driver verifier: two were from unknown places, so I wasn't sure about those. And finally I attached a log of the errors found in eventviewer.

Got a BSOD while on youtube. Attached the dump file (finally generated one). This crash seems to suggest they may be getting more frequent. Crash in Google Chrome, VLC Player, games, Adobe software. This has really dragged on for the last week...

EDIT: aaaaand it just crashed again, no BSOD just froze up. I was checking my email and comp locked up....
