All things eventually come to an end, and for Windows XP and its legion of holdouts, the end is nigh. It's a dead OS walking and the governors at Microsoft aren't going to pick up the phone at the last moment and give it yet another stay of execution. Microsoft general manager for Windows Commercial marketing, Rich Reynolds, confirmed as much in an interview with InformationWeek.

I'm glad to say that all the computers in use at the college I go to are running Windows 7 Professional, and not XP. Yeah, Windows XP is like a zombie at this point.

After the Vista debacle I thought Microsoft would struggle to produce anything better than XP, but Windows 7 has done so, in my view.

Other than a recent hardware problem that has now been rectified I've had no problems with Windows 7 whatsoever.

Goodbye XP - fondly remembered.

XP is still my backup OS for in case an application absolutely refuses to run under Windows 7. Just because MS doesn't support it anymore doesn't mean I can't or won't won't use it. I used Windows 98 until late 2005, lol.

I used 98SE until halfway through 2004.

I still have an XP partition for the same reason as you do.
I only have one program (a game) that won't run in W7 (32 or 64 bit) or XP VMs.

Lets face it, XP is the most profitable and successful desktop OS ever released.

I'm Still using XP on my other PC, even if microsoft stops supporting xp, it doesnt mean the end of Xp, theres still a lot of software for it you can download.

I am actually thinking about dual booting my win7 computer with it because my work is thinking about switching completely due to lack of funds

IMO, The new versions (11.04 & 11.10) aren't as good as the LTS version (10.04).
I don't like Unity (the Search function is good though).

XP is a remarkable OS, I would've never imagined back in 2003 that it'd still be officially available/supported till today. It's the first OS that was good enough to last this long.

These people I know they don't really know much about computers, so I'm pretty sure you've got to be an intermediate to advanced user to use Ubuntu.

Not necessarily. The website claims it is easy to use and offers free online training. I myself haven't tried it yet, only posted the link cause I think it is an interesting thing to get into. I think windows 7 is a lot better for various reasons, and Ubuntu is just a cool addition. However, if you can't afford an office full of new OSes, ubuntu will have to do I guess.

It depends on your level of experience.

Novice
There is probably little difference between learning the Windows GUI and the Linux GUI.
Basic
If you are used to Windows, you will be confused by the program names and unfamiliar icons.
Intermediate
I think these users will have the most difficulty.
You will need to learn how to use the Terminal (CLI) because the Linux GUI tools are very limited.
Advanced
Advanced Windows users (i.e. those who are familiar with scripting and CLI instructions) will probably be able to use Linux without too much difficulty.
The only problems will be accidentally using the Windows commands and syntax.

Interestingly enough, long-time Linux users are complaining about the new GUI changes (to various desktop environments) just like Windows users.

I think this kind of sucks... for gamers. There are a lot of games that refuse to play nice with Win 7, even a handful of newer ones. I myself like to play older games from the 1990's (on my old P4 machine because the majority of them, of course, don't like Win 7 even in compatibility mode). I also actually REALLY like how XP consumes far, far, far less system resources (as I have said many times before) which frees it up for the game to use - I notice even with a Core 2 Duo and 4 Gigs of RAM, games struggle because the OS and everything else sucks down 50% of both right off of the bat. Oh well... bye bye, XP (though it will still remain on my old P4 machine, supported by MS or not, until or unless that machine dies).

Same here...I currently have a new HP pavilion hpe p8...with windows 7...

and my old war horse the 2001 HP pavilion 7955, that has been in continuous use for nearly 10 years now with XP, a P4 1.5GHz, 40GB HDD, and 1.25Gigs pc133 mem......the only hardware I have added was a couple of sticks of new new 133 memory everything else is original. This old thing still works really well the HP OEM original Nvida Riva TNT2 64gb graphics card still displays very smooth streaming video. Amazing.


Not to go to far astray and I love Win OS, but I don't see why we can't occasionally touch on other OS....they are interesting. No harm done since they only have a tiny share of the market. I have to be honest for competitive reasons I would love to see Linux increase in share.

I will be using XP on my old computer (now used by my wife) until the thing dies.

It's an HP513C about 9 years old. 1.8GHz, 1 Gig of ram, 40 Gig HDD and I added a basic Nvida card about 6 years ago.

No way it will run Win 7 of any flavor.
