My laptop has been running extremely slowly lately. It takes longer than usual to load regular programs and any web browser activity takes ages. I have run malware (Malwarebytes) and virus scans (Microsoft Security Essentials) and removed some items. Malwarebytes didn't detect much, but I found a trojan with Security Essentials. However, after removal my problems persist. I have scanned and attempted recovery of bad sectors. Issues were found and fixed, but a disk check was said to be necessary. I tried running chkdsk c: /F, but the disk check cancelled within a fraction of a second on startup.

Any ideas on what I need to do? I am running Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit on a Lenovo Ideapad Y550.

Welcome to Windows Seven Forums.

It would appear that this is a known problem after SP1 has been installed and Microsoft have released a Hot Fix to cure the problem.

Yes, I can help!
go to IObit Advanced SystemCare 5 Beta 3 free download - Software reviews, downloads, news, free trials, freeware and full commercial software - Downloadcrew
Download ASC and run it, it works like a dream, it will speed up your laptop / pc and clean it all up, reg, temp files ... I use it daily and have no problems.

Robin

Castman, it sounds like your computer has some serious issues. Before installing and running any program that claims to speed up and clean up, I'd want to know what's wrong with my machine and how/why it got that way. It sounds like you still have malware on the machine. "Malwarebytes didn't detect much"; "I found a trojan with Security Essentials"; "after removal problems persist"; "tried running chkdsk but it cancelled".

Do you have a restore point that goes back to a date/time prior to when all these issues first appeared? If yes, use it. Then update Malwarebytes and run another full scan. If you don't have a restore point run another full updated Malwarebytes scan anyway. If Malwarebytes comes back clean use other scanners just to double check because no antimalware product is 100% effective 100% of the time. Some suggested tools (all are/have free versions):

SUPERAntiSpyware.com | Remove Malware | Remove Spyware - AntiMalware, AntiSpyware, AntiAdware!

Hitman Pro 3 - SurfRight

HouseCall - Free Online Virus Scan - Trend Micro USA

If your computer still comes back clean try running check disk again. If it still fails you may have some damaged or corrupt system files. Run a System File Checker scan from an elevated command prompt (Option Two.)

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1538-sfc-scannow-command-system-file-checker.html

If the scan finds any issues run the scan three times rebooting in between each scan. Please post back and let us know what you've done and what the results are.

So I ran Malwarebytes again and Hitman Pro and only found cookies (I removed them). I tried running a disk check but it automatically cancelled again. I then ran the system file checker and nothing was found.

Of note, firefox takes forever to run (currently using chrome) while any other program only slows down every so often.

forgot to mention, it appears any system restore points from before my problems got deleted somehow.

A lot of malware does that. Prevents the user from ... well ... restoring his machine to an earlier date/time.
