BSOD related to Garmin USB driver?

I recently build a new Sandy Bridge computer to replace an older Conroe system. The new build retained the SSD (OS and programs) drive and the SATA data drives along with the existing Win7/64HP installation.

I built an Asus P8Z68V Pro with an Intel i5-2500k and DDR3-1333 ram (12GB). I did not reinstall Win7/64HP. I had to tweak a few programs that had an issue with my substitute hardware, but otherwise it seems to run fine.

However, I've had some crazy BSODs that seem to tie into grmnusb.sys. Yesterday I had 3 BSODs in a row that would happen as soon as I plugged in my Garmin Edge 305. The first happened while I was OCed. I rebooted and changed to default BIOS settings. Another BSOD when I reconnected the 305. So I uninstalled the Garmin USB driver and rebooted. Another BSOD when I connected the 305.

I finally just left the Edge 305 connected and rebooted the computer and it came up ok and let me access the data on the device in a normal manner. And yet on the same system, I've had a number of times I've plugged the Garmin device in with no issues at all.

When I first built the box (a couple of weeks ago) I had a BSOD from the Edge 305 connection, again with the gmnusb.sys tie-in. I rebooted, uninstalled the affected usb driver and all was ok for a time. And then the Garmin didn't want to connect so I re-installed the Garmin usb driver and all was well for a time.. and then, here we go again.

Before I go though the routine of uploading the BSOD jcgriff zip files, I want to see if this is a known issue related to Z68 boards, or perhaps because I didn't re-install Win7 for the new hardware or if it's because computers just don't like me for some reason.

Any comments?

No known issues but we cant even tell if the GPS is the cause and the usual apps like Bluescreen view, and who crashed, are often wrong.

We do need the dmps

Alrighty. Here ya go. This is 2 days old, but hopefully still relevant.

Edit: system specs have been updated.

Edit: system specs have been updated.

Of course you are correct about the crash being caused by your grmngen.sys. It is from before win 7was released and seriously needs updating. With a newer driver it might well work.

Garmin is causing a memory "exception". If the newer driver doesnt help there are two tests to run to determine the underlying root cause.

All the below drivers need updating

How To Find Drivers:
- search Google for the name of the driver
- compare the Google results with what's installed on your system to figure out which device/program it belongs to
- visit the web site of the manufacturer of the hardware/program to get the latest drivers (DON'T use Windows Update or the Update driver function of Device Manager).
- if there are difficulties in locating them, post back with questions and someone will try and help you locate the appropriate program.
- - The most common drivers are listed on this page: Driver Reference Driver Reference
- - Driver manufacturer links are on this page: Drivers and Downloads

Wow. Thanks for that quick service!

I made every effort to install updated drivers when I installed the new HW. However, that did not include non-system drivers, which I'm sure have escaped my attention. I'll work on that list.

I've emailed Garmin about this issue. I'm sure I'm not alone. But I can't understand why it will work some days and other days will BSOD. I checked the Garmin site the other day and Garmin claims the USB drivers are for Win7x64.

Like most crashes it is a combination of things. Yours have Garmin and some other driver (one of the old ones?) conflicting and causing memory corruption. It may be as simple as the 2 drivers being loaded together.

If that is the newest driver they have re-installing it in compatibility mode will help. To do that (right click the installer>properties>compatibility>chooses OS)

Good luck and let us know if you need help.

Thanks for that tip.

Regarding the SiLib.sys driver... I only seem to find the pdf release notes from the Carrona site. A Google search wasn't much help either. And that's just my first driver to update. ;)

That driver appears to be part of Garmin's ANT agent software... installed to work with a Garmin Forerunner 405.

I just reinstalled the Garmin USB drivers after changing the installer properties to run in compatibility mode for XP.sp3. Let's see if that makes a difference.

Edit: I ran the system file checker just to see if it turned up anything... and it found no issues.

Edit 2: I connected the Edge 305 to the computer, got the normal USB connect tones (as I held my breath) and it said it installed the drivers. No BSOD. Maybe that compatibility mode made a difference. I'll keep an eye on it.
