As an administrator, I have User Account Control set to "always notify" in Windows 7, but one of my kids (standard user) can still install Google Chrome. Shouldn't this require the administrator password?

Also, UAC does not seem to limit a standard user's ability to Uninstall Programs. Is there a way to restrict that?

Thanks. So, is there any way to prevent installation of Google Chrome by a standard user?

Also, any way (using UAC) to restrict a standard user's ability to uninstall programs?

A standard user does not have the ability to uninstall software that is installed for all users. (In Program Files) Without administrative power.

Yes, I understand that is how it is supposed to work. But on my son's computer, he is set as a standard user and he can access (via the Control Panel), the Uninstall command and uninstall programs. I'm trying to change this, but there doesn't seem to be a way to do it.

Hello rpiwko, and welcome to Seven Forums.

You're son will be able to access "Programs and Features" in the Control Panel, but he will not be able to uninstall any of the listed programs that are installed for all users or for the administrator. If he tries, he will be presented with a UAC prompt asking to provide the administrator's password to approve uninstalling the program first.

If you have Windows 7 Professional or Ultimate installed, then you could use OPTION TWO in the tutorial below to set the group policy for all accounts except administrators to essentially block access to "Programs and Features" for his user account.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Shawn - thanks for your response. Any ideas on my other question....how to prevent him from installing Google Chrome? Note that I do not have Windows Professional or Ultimate.

Bob,

Since you are only wanting to block him from a specific program (Google Chrome) that's already installed, it may be easier to use OPTION TWO in the tutorial below to prevent everyone from being able to run the program's exe file.

Just curious...... why are you so set against Chrome? Its very stable AND secure.

FYI It's impossible to turn off Google Updater if you have Chrome installed.

Google Updater is pernicious spyware that builds a profile of you which pastes its ads everywhere you go on the web, as efficiently as any Big Brother nightmare.

Google will not deny that this information remains tied to your IP address and therefore makes all of your web activity traceable. Consider that Google cooperates with the Chinese government to suppress dissent.

The only solution to this is not to install any Google programs and to keep signed out of your Google web apps, especially the search page. This is not an inconvenience if you use Google's search box built stably into any other Web browser.

Use Opera myself. Tried Chrome for a short while but quit after learning about the China thing you mention. Was/am looking for a secondary browser though so thank you for the heads up. P.S. I don't even use Google search and got rid of my gmail accounts because of the suspicious (to me) Ad's that I would get. Was not aware that this tracking extended to the Browser too.

It can't track you when you use the search box built into another browser and only load Google as your search default, as long as you're not also signed into Google at the same time and have no Google in msconfig>Startup or >Services.

I suggest Firefox. I use it in order to drag Bookmarks into posts and it works best as far as I can tell. I prefer the Menu bar to access Bookmarks and History dropdowns in one click.

Firefox is pretty good about seeking permission from users before monitoring your activity.
