PCIe 4.0 to Double the Speed of PCIe 3.0

An announcement from the group that governs the PCI standard, known as PCI-SIG, has offered up the first details on the next-generation PCIe 4.0 standard. It’s not going to be showing up just around the bend, rather PCIe 4.0 won’t be a thing until around 2015. Before the final specs can be published, the group has to complete feasibility studies around 2013 or 2014. However, we do know that PCIe 4.0 will be shooting for some crazy performance numbers.

PCIe 3.0 hasnt really even become mainstream yet lol but suppose 2-3 years is a long time away.

This is just the first step. The PCI-SIG just set the target speed for PCIe-4. Now they have something to shoot for.

That should make for some screaming machines. Maybe it will force the CPU mfgs to finally breakthrough the 4GHz barrier (in stock form) instead of just adding cores.

lol but first we need a reason for that screaming machine the new E sandy bridge and soon to come ivy bridge are overkill at best current i5 and i7's dont tend to get stressed by many tasks lol

Well, I don't know. Windows makes use of the cores even if some software doesn't. I can see mine bouncing around with even with the most minor applications or Windows utilities. Maybe not stressed but they're in use and you can see the core rotation (spreading the load).

I'm not trying to be the 5th player in a string quartet but why for most modern computing devices do we even need PCI at any version at all.

USB 3 will fulfill most requirements -- and advantage is the Mobos can have a tiny footprint if they don't need to support this stuff.

PCIe is a 32 Lane serial bus with speeds up to 1GB per Lane (v3.0) so is much faster then USB. Multiple lanes can be used to a device to get the bandwidth needed as it uses packets and spreads the data over the selected lanes.

PCIe replaced the older PCI bus.

Surely will come in handy when the Nvidia GTX 9xx series comes out, as well as the Radeon HD 9xxx series ... but then ... I'm thinking too far ahead, aren't I?

lol... yeah specially as we wont have games good enough to warrant them! just poor visuals for console ports
