Contact corp. office and speak with head of marketing or person in charge of customer service. I have been there and done that. Don't stop until you get the results you want.

Make sure you have dates and name of persons you previously talked with.
You must let them know that you are not going to go away until they take care of you.

I still fail to see how Sony has any culpability in it not being able to run a linux live cd. It functions within it's design specs and is designed to run windows based software. Sony has no obligation to make sure it runs non windows based software.
As for not exchanging it that seems like BS. Unless you've had the laptop for way too long from purchase.

From what I'm understanding it will run no boot device that isn't windows.
I actually chased this down a little bit.
This machine is useless, even as a tech I wouldn't want to have to work on it because it lacks the basic hardware code support to use general utilities. Forget about any partitioning suite like acronis too.

No if this was done for a reason I can't think of it. They actually strayed here to I doubt it saved them any money in production or anything. The foundation is already in use on all their other systems.

On the Sony products, I've noticed Sony going down hill for years. I stopped buying Sony products long ago. There are much higher quality products for less or equal in price.

This is bad mojo. I certainly hope it's not something manufacturers are tinkering around with. It will make third party support very difficult and nearly impossible in many situations.

This goes beyond a minor inconvenience it basically means the system can only ever be serviced by sony with their software for it, and they're just going to give you what WHS got.

This is really something no one should have been expected to ask about either. I can't ever recall needing to ask 'will this run a live cd' because this is MAC behavior. Not PC behavior.

That I could understand for sure. But then that's just a bad product and the op should try to get a refund and get a different product. Worse comes to worse sell it as is since it's still fairly new and use the funds to buy what you need. I'm sure you could recoup at least most of the cost.

It is not a question of the installed Windows. When you load the live CD, Windows is not even in the loop. They have a very particular cursor interface on this particular system that is only recognized by their Win7 driver - that's the problem.

Maybe this is not possible because I have not seen anyone suggest it yet.

Do you think if you used an external mouse with the drivers on the Live CD, that might work?

Dear Sir,

I have a serious problem with a Sony Vaio and your organization is unable to respond to my situation.
I purchased this Vaio less than one year ago (purchase order attached). I had problems with this PC from the very beginning and your in-house service fixed it twice.

I had to leave for Europe from where I came back early November this year. I then wanted to use the PC and I discovered that it could not handle live CDs – probably the only PC in the world that cannot do that. I bought the Vaio to teach advanced computer classes where I frequently use live CDs. So, that function is essential.

After many hours on the phone, your service center agreed to look at it. I sent it to your service center in Laredo. They came back telling me that the PC was not designed to run live CDs – although live CDs would run on other Sony models. They referred me to your customer care department for follow-up.

At the customer care center I asked to exchange this model for another model. The woman there absolutely refused to entertain that option. I then asked to speak to a higher level manager, but she responded that she was the highest level I could talk to.

As it stands, I am stuck with an $1100 system with which I cannot do my job. I would appreciate if you could assign someone that can help to resolve this issue.

May have suggested how you, as a teacher, are frustrated and disappointed you are with their product. IMHO

I should of mentioned this before, I only thought of it because I am in a repair situation with HP about one of their Printers going South on us.

If you obtained an incident or case number when you dealt with Customer Service include that along with a way to be contacted.
A return address, maybe your home phone should suffice.
It is a shame you do not know the "woman's" name and her location I would included that also, unless you do.

Also you mentioned it is under warrenty that alone should get you started cause you payed for the support they are obligated

Make copies of all your documents even the recipts in case they try to say they never received them

Take photo copies of the product before hand in case they ask you to send it in that way they can't say you did something to the product thus making it unrepairable or switchable

But they never advertised it as running some CD that had drivers that were not compatible with their hardware.
Personally, I think it is the live cd not having the drivers for the sony hardware.

In your initial greeting and salutations, yes!
Then you gradually work into the fact that, You are bloody pissed!

You need to be strategic, and tactical in this matter. Do you like the game of Chess?
Your initial response should be to let Sir Howard know the particulars of the situation, and then in further communication the fact that you are upset! And, that, you have.

Personally, I have always been taught to respect my elders; Sir Howard is is 9years older than me, but he gives the impression that he does not not know what is going on underneath him.

It all boils down to, you are the customer. He is the merchant.

You are upset that the merchandise that you purchased was not able to preform the functions that you thought it could preform, only because the machines limitations were never published.
That is an error on the merchant's part; that included, at the very least, the Support/Advertising, and Merchandizing Departments, that ultimately bleed back to the CEO.

But in my professional life I have dealt with CEOs of Fortune 500 companies and of my own company which once was #5 in the world. I think I know how these guys function. They like "sanitized" messages and they can very well read between the lines. Plus they usually have an excellent feel for what people think - versus of what they are saying.

And, I understand what you mean...Before I retired I was employed with, the #2 world-wide newsprint publisher in 1995. In 2005 we were down to #11, when I retired in 2008 it was #14.

If you could advance your knowledge of publications, you would know who I worked with. They lead parades though many a Vale.

The "Publisher/Editor-in-Chief" that I retired under did not fully understand how the the "house" was falling down around him. But, it was not entirely his fault.
The world of advertising was falling apart, and through no fault of his own, so was his Company.

Unfortunately, you are exactly right, they do like "sanitized", But, I have found "their read, and feel" is only as good as the support that they have constructed around them.
I could read my publishers "body language", and he did not like it when I told him he was not speaking the truth.

Does anyone like a "no-man"?
If I was a CEO, I would appreciate them.
