Yeah, I guess you do that when you write to some lower charges. But if you write to a CEO, it is better to stay low key - I think.
Maybe to a point,
but why?
In your initial greeting and salutations, yes!
Then you gradually work into the fact that, You are bloody pissed!
You need to be strategic, and tactical in this matter. Do you like the game of Chess?
Your initial response should be to let Sir Howard know the particulars of the situation, and then in further communication the fact that you are upset! And, that, you have.
Strategic:
You stated in your posted letter that (with some minor liberties):
you are a Teacher that teaches advanced computer classes where you frequently use live CDs. So, that function is essential.
Where is that different to the responsibilities of a CEO?
What do you suppose would happen if Sir Howard did not receive his reports first thing in the morning?
Heads would roll!
Well...At the very least his eggs would not taste right.
He is only
5years younger than you, and your going to let him get away with this?
Personally, I have always been taught to respect my elders; Sir Howard is is 9years older than me, but he gives the impression that he does not not know what is going on underneath him.

Sir Howard Stringer like the rest of us, puts his pants on, one leg at a time.
The only way I would consider him different, is if he sat down to pee, and then he better have a medical excuse.
Whatever happened to "Children are to be seen, and not heard?"
Is it different, only because of the the size of the spoon in a person's mouth?
It all boils down to, you are the customer. He is the merchant.
You are upset that the merchandise that you purchased was not able to preform the functions that you thought it could preform, only because the machines limitations were never published.
That is an error on the merchant's part; that included, at the very least, the Support/Advertising, and Merchandizing Departments, that ultimately bleed back to the CEO.
Tactical:
As it stands, I am stuck with an $1100 system with which I cannot do my job. I would appreciate if you could assign someone that can help to resolve this issue.
I sincerely hope that you receive a timely, and positive response (RMA) to your predicament.

Learn --> Teach
or it is all wasted.
Anyone, that can comprehend, any subject, no matter how large or small, and convey that understanding to another fellow human-being, is Gold in my book.
Teachers Rock!
A regular person can not understand what it is to be like a CEO, and they, can not explain it to us either.

Okay, I am done.
I thank everyone for lending an ear.
I am going to pick up my soapbox, walk home, and stand in the corner.
