here is what happened with my dual boot install

I had built a new desktop computer about 5 months ago, and loaded XP on it. It has a single hard drive, partitioned into 3 partitions. The third partition, E:, is about 100Gb and I use it for temporary files. I.E. if I want to collect some files into a single folder and burn that to CD, I do that on E:.

Today I installed W7 RC1, and installed it on the third partition. Here is what I discovered:

1. When I boot into W7, the drive letters get shuffled- the third partition becomes C:, the first 2 partitions become D: and E:.

2. I did what I thought was a clean install, but the files and folders that were already on that partition are still there.

Since Vista the current active OS is always on drive C: - unless you perform an upgrade install from within another OS that means that the C:dirve is not available.

If you can go into computer management, (right click computer select manage), and then into disk management and post a screenshot of your actual partitions, we should be able to assist further

There isn't a problem, I was just stating what happened with my setup.

I don't know how much I will actually USE W7 before Oct. 22, but for now I will just play with it occasionally. The big thing is that I don't want to have to reinstall my apps under W7, at least not all at once.

That is what happens when you use the same HDD. to do differently you need more than 1 HDD. my Vista is C: =always, my Win7 7264 is L:\ = always and Win7 -vista upgrade is f:\ always. but then i have 3 HDDs and ea is partitioned into 3

XP = C:
W7 = E: (always)

OK so you have c:, and E:. whats the problem? or were you just saying thats what your dual boot looks like?

Maybe you came in late but someone else here had the problem. All I did was state how my installation went and maybe I should have highlighted that I "assigned a drive letter" to the W7 install which I believe may have been the difference between mine which went smoothly and our friend here who had a problem with his.

Im glad yours went well I was just somewhat confused and multi tasking 5 ppl at the same time. I think OP were confused as well given the other responses
