Solved Vipre Internet Security 2012 Causes Whole System to Hang

I have Vipre Internet Security 2012 installed on both of my PCs. On both, the service used by the antivirus software causes my system to hang. SBAMSvc.exe received an error, and it takes 10-30 minutes for any action I take to actually result in an outcome. For instance, I click on Start Menu, and the menu does not show up for about 10 minutes.

The question I have is: is there an easy way to stop the service? I run as a standard user as I was told it is more secure to do so, so I am not able to just shut down Vipre. I also find it impossible to run task manager and click "Show processes from all users" to get administrative priviliges before opening the Services tab to stop the service. When I try this method, I never receive the dialog to enter the administrative password.

Any ideas on how to stop a service running as a standard user? Maybe a batch file solution where the batch file is always run as administrator?

Boot to Safe Mode, logon as Administrator.
Uninstall Vipre Internet Security 2012.
Reboot, download and install Microsoft Security Essentials.

LOL, I've been working on these forums long enough to expect that response. I am trying to find a workaround that does not require me to switch antivirus softwares since I paid for this one and this is the only problem I am having with it, and it only occurs often enough to be annoying. The company is currently looking into a solution for me. I am just trying to find a way to stop the annoyance until it is fixed.

No, unfortunately that would disable the antivirus. I may have stumbled on a solution, however. I will post back after trying it if it is successful.

Ah OK, perhaps I misunderstood, but I thought you said you wanted to stop the service?

That worked beautifully. I fixed my issue with an automated solution:

1. Created a batch file
2. Inside the batch file, I had the following

net stop SBAMSvc
​

3. The batch file has to be run as an administrator to stop the service, so

a. Clicked Start Menu
b. Typed eventvwr into Search programs and files (did not hit enter)
c. Right clicked eventvwr.exe
d. Clicked Run as administrator
​

4. Expanded Windows Logs
5. Clicked Application
6. Right Clicked the error I get
7. Clicked Attach Task To This Event...
8. Went through the task scheduler basic instructions by hitting next until I got to Action
9. At Action, Start a Program
10. Clicked Next
11. Browsed for and selected my batch file
12. Clicked Next
13. Put a check in the box Open the properties dialog for this task when I click Finish
14. Clicked Finish
15. In the properties, went to the General tab
16. Checked the circle for Run whether user is logged on or not and checked the box for Run with highest privileges and set the Configure for: Windows 7
17. Clicked OK


A few minutes later, I caused the problem to occur by opening the proper tabs in my browser (for some reason, Vipre does not like support.microsoft) and task scheduler automatically shut down my antivirus software when the error occurred in Event Viewer. I reloaded it and everything works well again.

Why put up with a problem like that? I understand you paid for it but why not uninstall it until they provide a fix?

I would consider that route if I could convince them to extend my subscription by the time it takes them to fix it.

It is very difficult to remove completely, even with Revo Unistaller. Leaves traces on your machine. You may google "Vipre removal" for more info.

Does Vipre offer any satisfaction guarantee for a possible refund/compensation ?

Yeah, their original was much better. They made a big change a few months ago, and I am also thinking this is the last time I will pay for a subscription from them. A shame, too. Their first program barely used any resources, and it caught a few viruses the other three programs I tested did not.

I have an uninstall utility they gave me through a chat session, so I should be able to remove it all.

I think they have a guarantee. I will have to look into it. I know if I get a virus, they will work with me to remove it and fix my computer for free (or at least they used to have that clause).

VIPRE causing Windows7 64-bit OS to hang

Temporary fix is easy - just disable Firewall Web filtering option until GFI will fix the problem and use Firefox with noscript to visit untrusted web sites.

I actually removed the program and replaced it with The good and free system security combination and have had no problems since.
