 High prices and getting higher. Smaller packages and getting smaller. Are we just use to it? Is there anything we can do? I really started to take notice when my half gallon of ice cream shrunk . Then the tuna fish .

Well, what next, you may ask.

Just before Thanksgiving I got very sick. Managed to get in one trip to the store for the big meal and bought, among other things, some cranberry sauce. Put it in the pantry next to the one already there. It was SMALLER, and it cost more :banghead:.

Turns out one of the prescriptions I was taking was the reason I was so sick. Of course when I figured that out it was an easy fix, just stop taking the stuff. Can't stop buying food...........

I just opened a box of Kleenex and guess what, the sheets are smaller . HAVE you checked your toilet paper? Are we screwed or what?

Planning human sacrifice. Hoping for better internet service.
You are right mate. Costs for everything has been rising and rising and rising. All essential commodities prices like food, petrol. etc. are going high like anything. But my salary isn't going as high as it should be. Infact, its stagnant since last 2-3 yrs. but as you rightly said, "Cant stop buying food".

I believe things are better in developed countries. Its only becoming worse in developing countries like India. Thanks to our corrupt politicians.

Quit using toilet paper years ago as I substituted corn cobs....
Just got a new bushel for stocking up and noticed the corn cobs are even getting smaller:o May have to resort to recycling them.:zip:

That's exactly why I won't shop at the grocery store that is a half mile up the road from me. I'll make the 15 mile trip to the next town to go to Woodmans.
Simple bag of chips - $4.79 vs $3.00
Box of cereal - $4.29 vs $3.59
the list goes on. I do the same thing with gas, if it's cheaper somewhere, I will stop there when it's convenient even though I live right down the road from 3 gas stations.
Gotta dig for the deals.

Toilet paper is overrated btw.....leaves and corn cobs for the win. :p

Dinesh, while our circumstances may not be exactly the same, I do believe they parallel one another. Prices here also rise faster than my income. I guess I'm just glad to be working. And at the risk of raising hackles with the powers-that-be on the board, I would include stubbornness and incompetence when describing our politicians.

Best to you, friend

Yeah, having job security has been nice over the last few troubling years. That part I can't complain about, but it is getting harder and harder to do much for said self. With the price of everything going up constantly, it is really tough deciding what I can do for myself. Working just to pay bills and nothing else is not what I call living.
Not being able to do much outside of work and sitting around because of trying to save as much money as possible is getting really stressful. There needs to be some "me" time for everyone, but that's tough to come by for a lot of people these days, and I've seen some people that aren't handling it really well. People having to do more work, for the same pay, with longer hours. Some people where I work have been working 12 hour days, driving for roughly an hour per day to get to work and back, leaving no time to do much else except sleep. (I know 12 hours doesn't sound like a lot to some, but this is in a plastic injection molding plant, running machines and such. People can lose limbs or even life with these machines, so being tired or wore out is not safe, yet no one seems to care).
People are starting to get burned out since they just won't hire anyone to help and relieve some of the stress, and the more tired/burned out they become, quality suffers, words get said, then people get pissed. I see no changes coming anytime soon, and they're going to be in for a surprise when people start leaving for other jobs because mentally and physically they just can't do it anymore, me included.

This can only go on for so long before all hell breaks loose.

More work for the same pay would be good. How about more work for less pay? In my company, there used to be 3 times as many support people. So all the remaining do at least the job that 3 people were doing. We techs work longer for less money. I drive 5+ hours a day myself. It's better then unemployment, but not by leaps and bounds. That's kind of what I was getting at...now our people do twice as much work, but still getting paid what they were in 2008 when they were doing the "normal" amount of work.

 High prices and getting higher. Smaller packages and getting smaller. Are we just use to it?

Yes.

As consumers we grumble, yet we continue to consume because short of a mass united consumer front that speaks out against these practices, there is ultimately little choice except to bend over and take it.

In developed countries where self-reliance has largely been all but eroded thanks to consumerism, a halt to this systemic practice would be extremely difficult to counteract due to it's inherent acceptance.

Unfortunately developing countries are squandering the chance to change the face of global consumerism thanks to wild eyed enthusiasm of all the new and shiny options available.

Instead of saying "Yes, these new things are nice, but no thank you, we can't afford it" they are saying "Oooh, new shiny thing - can't afford it, but must have it". If the former and more logical consensus was taken, the markets would have to yield and this would then have a positive flow on effect in developed countries.

Unfortunately they've chosen the latter in their rush to embrace the capitalist consumer ideals holus-bolus.

At the moment, it's simply gouging because companies can get away with it and subsequently do get away with it. If a dollar is to be made, it will be and damn the consequences.

Soon enough though, the fact that the planets resources are finite and are barely be able to sustain existing the developed populous appetite's as is, let alone new and emerging ones; gouging will become based more on sheer necessity and no longer solely one of pure profit.

One thing that is almost a given - it's only going to get worse. Much worse.

If you've got a job think yourself lucky, try being a pensioner who's not able to work to try making a bit extra but has to survive on an income that only goes up by a couple of pounds once a year and doesn't even get a full pension.

Everyday we're getting less for our money. Petrol used to cost £1 per litre and now it's £1.40 and if you drive alot, that's costing you hundreds of pounds each year.

Doesn't seem to show up to the extent we see it happening, in the Cost of Living index ... wonder how they do that?

And ... don't see this mentioned in the thread ... but is it possible that instead, the money is becoming worth less and less?
