If a plane only crashes once every 100 years it still could crash tomorrow.

Roboform free will allow up to 10 sites to store passwords and doesn't cost much for unlimited either. This program and a few others should ensure that secure passwords of more than 12 random characters are used - probably best to use as many as site allows. It is only necessary then for one secure password to be remembered and the other passwords could all be stored in a Truecrypt container for back-up too.

i use roboform lite add on for firefox and it has no restrictions on the number of passcards it will save.
it still has all the functions of roboform except for the online storage, this is easily solved by regularly uploading the content of the passcard folder to your own online storage facility ,ie skydrive ,dropbox etc.
you could use windows live mesh to automatically sync the folder

I'm one of the 'dummies' who prefers IE for most of my password sites and I use Firefox for everything else but I'm quite happy to pay the little that Roboform costs. I could use Norton Identity Safe which comes with NIS but I like to have some things to be independent of others.

In reply to Infinite - anyone can remember a secure 20 character password with a little practice by breaking it down and using it until it becomes second nature - no need to give thieves the chance of finding it.

Yes, statistics. However, it is a means of gauging, particularly when combined with Password Strength Checker and considering the combination of upper/lower case, numbers, symbols, repeating letters, etc.

I think FranzB had it much closer with the "stored on pc and could be stolen" part there. Once a print is in digital form and can be applied that way someone usually finds a way around the security.

I found that one amusing as well since someone was able to get into a large number of FB accounts lately including a celebrity and post spam as if the account holder posted it. I agree with you. A password that can be cracked in 30 minutes is useless. But those big numbers mean nothing. It only gives the time that it takes (by one particular approach) to crack the password with a certainty of 100%. It could be cracked in 5 minutes if the attacker is lucky. Only if the attacker is completely unlucky it will take 767 etc. years.
Recently i saw that passwords are not so much safer by making them complex but that the length
is much more important. The difference between Mci4Alb) and Mci4AIb)......
is huge. Just a difference of ...... which is easy to remember.

The thing that really "amuzes" me it that people are willing to put all kinds of personal information on facebook. Many details even. I always wonder why. Would you walk out of your house and approach the first person you see and tell your name, your address, etc? Then invite the person into your house for a chat and a coffee and leave everything lying around while you make the coffee? If you do, chances are that the person approached would become suspicious. Would you walk into a suspicious part of town whistling? Or would you turn around?
This virtual world, in my opinion, is not embedded in our -let's say- evolution that has taught us to be careful or else.
We are sitting between our own 4 walls and operating a gadget that does exactly what we want (most of the time).
It gives a false feeling of security.

That's actually understating things a bit! I've cautioned more then one person about posting too much there. People tend to get relaxed and utter out just where they are and what they are doing or planning to do in the next day as far as personal activities. That as well as how much they include in the profiles there can be revealing in a not so good way.

I think the best way to solve the problem is the one they decided on before they even had tested the moon buggy to be used after the first moon landing. Testing was to be done in the desert and if the buggy showed flaws it was not supposed to be "fixed". A completely new design would be made.
Btw, does anyone know anything at all about the testing of a new internet setup by researchers at various US universities? Some time ago i saw an article about it.
