Once Windows 7 is complete, how do I get it?
The answer depends on who you are:

  • MSDN & TechNet Subscribers: Subscribers will be able to download the final version of Windows 7 a few weeks after we announce RTM.
  • Volume License (VL) Customers: Customers with Software Assurance for Windows will be able to download the final version of Windows 7 Enterprise a few weeks after we announce RTM. As announced today by Bill Veghte during his WPC09 keynote, customers without Software Assurance will be able to purchase Windows 7 through Volume Licensing on September 1st.
  • Consumers, Enthusiasts, & Beta Testers (Everyone else): The retail version of Windows 7 will be available in stores October 22nd. If you pre-ordered Windows 7, it should be delivered sometime around the October 22nd timeframe (depends on the retailer). You can pre-order Windows 7 today through many online retailers like the Microsoft Store.
  • On New PCs: OEMs are expected to start shipping new PCs with Windows 7 pre-installed on them around October 22nd.
He forgot to add torrent to the list. :p

My first build!
I'm still struggling to see what all of the excitement is about the RTM. My assumption is that once somebody gets the RTM and they figure out a way to hack it so that it can be activated...then they have the final version that everybody else would be paying for. Does that about sum up the reason for all the clammering and frantic posting and searching?

If that is the case, I guess the excitement is just lost on me as I have a legal copy of Vista with a free Win7 upgrade for my windows computer and I use Linux on my other computers (and that's always free..so piracy not required).

I am excited about RTM because it means I can then run the final copy that I will pay for on my machines. It has nothing to do with hack/slash/crack. It's the beginning of the end of RC for me. Officially.

But why the excitement and the need to get it right now, why not just wait until it's easily obtainable after official release? Are people having issues with the freely available and safely downloadable RC1 release that Microsoft is providing? I've been using that since it came out and it's been completely stable and functional for me.

I am referring to an official release. I will get it when it becomes available on MSDN/TechNet. I was just pointing out a link where people can get info about the RTM, and some of the questions answered... and not rumors or torrents.

Alright, I gotcha. Sorry, I just lumped you in with the majority of those here who are not MSDN/TechNet members and aren't looking for their releases in official channels.

I second that! Not only are they having anxiety attacks regarding getting the latest leak, they are arguing with and insulting each other over which version will be the REAL RTM!

"For me" I believe is the operative phrase here :).

Do you restore your open folder windows when you logon? Give it a try with RC1 (or any other build before 7600, assuming you can find an option for it in Folder Options) and tell me the results, once you're able to recover. Do you have a Canon iPF6100 wide-format printer? Didin't think so. Do you use sleep / wake your system a lot? Do you transfer files or share printers with other networked PCs constantly? Is your PC overclocked?

Everybody has different systems and usage requirements, and what works perfect for somebody may not work at all for somebody else. Some of us are just getting there as far as a totally working environment in Windows 7. And since I really don't want to use my old XP x64 SP1 environment, like 7echno7im I want to get to the end of this thrill ride ASAP. I will probably stick with 7600.16384, as it is now working pretty much 100% for me. So far :D.

Sorry, my statement was not directed at this thread or your comments. Your post and its link are quite helpful and rational.

I was referring to another thread where words like "stupid", etc were being tossed about.

If people are testing different leaked versions to see if a problem specific to their setup is resolved, so be it, I would too.

But I have no illusions that this version or that version is the "final" RTM. The final RTM will be the one designated by MS in an official announcement.

I love the insinuation that everyone here is EITHER legitimate OR gets torrents.

Can't be both with you, huh?

I have both MSDN and a top-level EA. Regardless, I don't get into most betas without asking pretty please. And I haven't got the time anyway. So I pull the leaks. *shrug*

As for this original post - the blog - it's hilarious and just terrible really. I love the part about how "if you download a torrent of Windows 7 it is fake and has malware in it". Nice.

hmm that's not what I see, it says.

"As always, beware of what you download. There are many bogus copies of Windows 7 floating around the Internet. More often than not, they contain a rather nice malware payload. And don’t believe everything you read on the Internet. When Windows 7 hits RTM, it will be announced here. Until that happens, any builds you are likely to see on the web are either not the final bits or are laced with malicious code."

Seems like a warning to me, and not what you are stating.

I didn't just assume the worst...that's why I asked at the beginning why there was so much excitement and to set me straight.

Everybody has different systems and usage requirements, and what works perfect for somebody may not work at all for somebody else. Some of us are just getting there as far as a totally working environment in Windows 7.
Again, that's why I was asking. I just didn't realize that people were clammering for the release because they had parts that were still broken that they needed fixed ASAP.

Really? I haven't seen EVEN ONE bogus copy. Every torrent I've downloaded has legitimately been Windows 7.

More often than not, they contain a rather nice malware payload.

Again - really? I haven't seen any yet. If they contain malware, it would have to be inserted by Microsoft, since they're just the ISO's straight from MS!

And don’t believe everything you read on the Internet. When Windows 7 hits RTM, it will be announced here. Until that happens, any builds you are likely to see on the web are either not the final bits or are laced with malicious code."

Sounds like he's saying all the builds currently out are either not final (which I believe) or full of malware (which is BS).

Seems like a warning to me, and not what you are stating.

In the same way that MS's usual FUD is a "warning", sure.
