I can't get my WLM to sort by date, either ascenting or descending. New emails end up all over the place and I have to go down the list to find them. In the columns I have the date selected, along with "subject" and "from" and that's all. I did a repair of Windows Live Essentials, but it didn't help. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks, Don.

Don

How did you get it to sort for date, and subjust/from at the same time?

I assume you are looking in the inbox. How do you have quick views configured?

Thanks for the quick reply to my query, JMH.

I have Date, Subject, and From checked in the columns section, because these are the things I need to see in my email listing. (I tried it using only the Date, and it still didn't sort the emails by date, in either the ascending or descending modes.)

Yes, I'm looking at the "in box"

I have 4 email accounts and the same problem exists with them all.

I've never used (not even looked at) the Quick View before. When I looked at it I saw there were a bunch of things checked in it. I changed it to just one checked, i.e. "show all unread emails".

WLM is certainly a change for legacy users.

What version of WLM are you using?

(I've always assumed WLM updating was automatic.)

Have you clicked on the "date" header at the top of the column? Does it have a triangle to the right of the word "date"?

Hi roncerr. Thanks for getting back to me.

Yes, date is at the top, opposite the triangle, and it is checked (along with several other items below it).

Regards, Don.

I assume you mean the word "date" is to the left of the triangle. Is the triangle pointing up or down? If you click on the word "date" does the triangle change direction (e.g. pointing down instead of up)?

(BTW, it is obvious that it was "checked" in the list of options, because if it weren't checked there would be no date column at all.)

Here's what my "date line" looks like (the date line within the columns window). It's the top line in the Columns box. On the far left there is a square with my check mark in it. Next to that is the word "Date". On the far right, at the far end of the line is a triangle pointing up. (It doesn't change direction.) It's directly above the bar that moves things up and down. It's the only triangle there. Whoops!!

The problem appears to be solved... All along I've been right clicking on the top line to get ascending, descending and columns. I've then been clicking on the ascending/descending options within the columns section without it making any difference to the disorder in sorting by date. However, I just now clicked on "date" on the outside top line, and the triangle you've been talking about magically appeared. At the same time my email dates straightened themselves out.

Thanks for staying with me. I might never have corrected the problem without your persistance, combined with a bit of luck. I really don't know what was going on or why the magic triangle suddenly appeared.

I do have another WLM question, but it's on a different subject.

Thanks again for your help. Don.

Thanks again. Don.

You were looking inside the "columns" window that lets you select which colums to include in the main window view. The triangle to the right at the top of the "scroll bar" (the bar that moves things up and down) is the one you thought I meant but did not. I was referring to the main mail list window (not the columns set-up window). That triangle at the top of the column currently doing the sorting indicates ascending or descending. If you click on another column heading, the sort-by column will change to that one and the triangle will confirm it as the sort-by column.
