Solved It's not the printer, it's the network (Error code 0x80070035)

I'm moving http://www.sevenforums.com/network-...access-shared-printer-files-home-network.html here, simply because the issue is not printer related; it's network-related, and I wanted to get the problem updated under a better title.

In a nutshell:

  • Win7 laptop is connecting fine to internet via home wireless network
  • Same Win7 laptop cannot, however, access my Win7 desktop - the files, or more importantly for these purposes, the printer USB-connected to that computer and shared with users on the network
Attempts to access my PC from her laptop - whether clicking on its icon in the network view from her laptop, or specifying it by pathname (\\mywin7\), fail with

Error code 0x80070035
The network path was not found.
None of the following has fixed it:

  • Turning my firewall off completely
  • Stopping her AVG antivirus
  • Starting in safe mode and doing a Malwarebytes sweep
  • Using msconfig to do a selective boot with none of the services started
  • Mucking with the TCP/IP settings on either computer
  • Playing with the services on either computer
  • Specifying the printer path by IP address name
  • System restoring to an earlier point in time
From her computer I can ping mine by name and by IP address.


Every other computer in our house - XP ones and Win7 - can print to the printer connected to my computer, and every other computer has normal network access to my computer.


I don't have a Norton product - ever - on my computer or hers.

Outcome if I path to the printer is that nothing happens. The start menu just goes away.

Outcome if I path to the computer itself - \\192.168.1.5 in this case - is that nothing happens. It just hangs there with the start menu staying up.

I found this, please let us know if it helps.
In that link is perhaps the one thing I have not tried yet, which is to open the network adapter in device manager, show hidden devices, "delete them all" (yikes), and then it will work.

So questions before I try it:

  • Is the above (delete the devices from network adapter) what you were recommending?
  • May I leave my "known good" devices when I do the delete? That would be the Ethernet adapter and the wireless adapter. There are maybe 10-15 items under network adapter with hidden devices included.
For the record, I did see this suggestion early in my quest, but the suggestion specifically was to remove all but one Microsoft somethingorother device, and I only had one of those so I didn't try it. For giggles, I DID at that time try removing the wireless adapter and then restarting the computer. I had to manually reconnect to the internet, including entering the usually-stored security password, but that didn't fix my network access.

Well, unfortunately, the deleting the hidden devices did not solve this problem.

I actually was unable to delete several "WAN Miniport" hidden devices, but did delete, or rather, uninstall, them.

Restarted the computer and the conditions appear to be the same as they were before. Actually when I logged back in after restart, Windows took a few minutes to install device driver software on new devices it "found" - and then all or virtually all of what I'd uninstalled was back.

2xg's link has some other ideas, not as low-hanging fruit though as that one was, so I might try some, or I might wait for further guidance.

If it is a network connection and you have alot of issues with getting it to connect

why not re do the whole network ,That would just eliminate the extra things that you are doing

I would try to re match homegroup settings ,to me it sounds like your wife's laptop is not useing the correct homgroup log in or connection to work in sync with the printer

Homegroup should have been the first option especially working with multi connected pc's on a network


Go through your home group make sure all the pc's are useing the same password and make sure you can see all each other on the network connection after that you would have to reassign a network drive and printer connection to get it going again

Although the afflicted laptop is a Windows 7 computer, we have not used Homegroup here - three Win7 machines, two XP machines. When the problem started, I tried setting up a homegroup and it did not work. Same problems as described.

The issues involved here appear to be isolated to one Windows 7 laptop, as the other computers in the house can print okay, meaning they can access my computer via the "network path."

Hmmm you know win 7 has a compadability mode maybe you need to see if that is why the network isn't working right

Im thinking your network is thinking XP not 7

Also if the homegroup didn't take that should have gave you a sign something was up also have you tryed updating the eithenet adapter and drivers for the router etc

Yes, make sure that you have identical User Name and Passwords from the computer where the Canon is shared from and the problematic computer.

More tests that we can try if you have not done this yet, from the computer that has the Canon printer hooked up to... share the Local disk C, give everyone a Full permission for now. Next task, try access this computer again by clicking on the Start Orb and type \\IPAddress\C and also \\ComputerName\C, if successful and no more error, just try to type in the \\IPAddress or \\ComputerName, by doing this you should be able to see the shared printer, double click on it, please inform us the outcome.

Another thing...if you router has a USB Port you may connect your Cannon printer and it becomes a print server then you will connect to the printer thru your router's IP address. My DLink DIR 655 router has this feature and it comes handy, also external HDD can be shared off from the network.

  • Passwords - I have never had matching passwords/users across the computers constituting our home network, and file sharing and printing have always worked. In fact, with the computer in question, everything had worked perfectly from when my daughter got it, to a couple weeks ago, with no common users or passwords between my host computer and her laptop. I did try setting up a common account (user/passwords matching) on both computers, but that did not fix anything.
  • Sharing local disk - My computer (the one with the printer hooked up to it) has a C and D drive, and the D drive is wholly shared. Referencing the computer from the search box of the start menu on the laptop - by IP address or by name - does not work. I realize that this is not the same (you said share C, and I'm sharing D). But other than being able to ping my computer by IP address or name from a command prompt on her laptop, there appears to be no other way to interact with my computer from hers.
A couple other points that might be germane to this discussion.

First - and I have said this before - the Windows 7 homegroup doesn't figure into this. We've never used homegroups. I tried to do so as a solution to this problem and the laptop "saw" that my computer was part of the homegroup, but that didn't allow it to share the printer (which, again, IS shared, and can be used by the other computers in the house). Just to take "homegroups" off the table, I left the homegroup via both of the computers in question. So we currently have no homegroup.

Second - and this is new information that I don't know if I've shared - when I view "network" from my computer, I see every online device in our house, which at peak is one other Win7 computer and two XP machines. But from the afflicted laptop, viewing the network only shows two computers - her own of course, plus mine, which cannot be accessed. Maybe this means something?

Yes like we pointed it it does mean something one of your PC's is not in sync with everything else

What ever way you used to link all your pc's and printers together one is not linked properly

which means your daughters laptop is in sync with another system but the others aren't
Most likly you set it up 2 different ways and made it conflict against each other

Like early said it is better to just scratch it and re do the whole thing this will just get rid of the BS all together

I know it is real time consuming but this would be the best bet re connect all devices in sync together

The other option is to do a win repair on the laptop or system restore to a previous times
You just have a botched configuration on the laptop

Please don't forget this, another option to consider and no need for Homegroup or Workgroup which can cause issue similar to what you're encountering although you have mentioned that it was working before and not anymore.

Please don't forget this, another option to consider and no need for Homegroup or Workgroup which can cause issue similar to what you're encountering although you have mentioned that it was working before and not anymore.

Unfortunately my router (Netgear WGR614) doesn't have a USB port.

I'm leery of going too deep with the afflicted computer, since my daughter uses it every day for school, doesn't need network sharing, and can print by emailing stuff to another computer at home for printing.

That said, I've seen via google people with a problem sounding like mine, who've fixed it by resetting winsock and tcp/ip via "netsh winsock reset" and "netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt" commands.

Given what I've said in this long thread, what's the likelihood of the above fixing the problem?

Please don't forget this, another option to consider and no need for Homegroup or Workgroup which can cause issue similar to what you're encountering although you have mentioned that it was working before and not anymore.
Another thing...if you router has a USB Port you may connect your Cannon printer and it becomes a print server then you will connect to the printer thru your router's IP address. My DLink DIR 655 router has this feature and it comes handy, also external HDD can be shared off from the network.

Unfortunately my router (Netgear WGR614) doesn't have a USB port.

I'm leery of going too deep with the afflicted computer, since my daughter uses it every day for school, doesn't need network sharing, and can print by emailing stuff to another computer at home for printing.

That said, I've seen via google people with a problem sounding like mine, who've fixed it by resetting winsock and tcp/ip via "netsh winsock reset" and "netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt" commands.

Given what I've said in this long thread, what's the likelihood of the above fixing the problem?
it could work or maybe your system needs a adapter upgrade via downloadable drivers from the manufactuer

Almost three full years after it began, this issue is solved. I had never paid anyone to clean a machine of malware, but after increasingly bizarre behavior from the computer, I brought it in to the shop, and whatever they cleaned out restored the networking functionality. Marking as solved!
