On the flip side, My Xbox360 which I bought in May of 2006, which is almost 6 years old is still playing all of the current games for the platform without requiring any upgrades. the same cannot be said for my PC.

Ugh, I don't know about your 360 but MY 360 plays modern games like CRAP.

Massive popup, low draw distance, stuttering, low frame rate and HORRIBLE resolution. It's /at least/ 10x crappier than my PC at playing last years games, even games that were written FOR the XBOX!

The 360 is already 1-2 years WAY late for an upgrade :( having to sit for 1-2 more is going to be intolerable. Usually I look for xbox versions of most games as I like to play on the bigger screen and more comfortable chair, but I'm not buying any more now, the latest crop, compared to a couple I've played on my PC (With a 2 year old card!) have convinced me that the 360 is just too much crap to waste money on a game that I can get for the PC as well... It was only barely comparable to a PC 6 years ago, playing on it is like being stuck in 2005 permanently :(

i stand correct knew it was the 6000 series tho :p
either way thats pretty dam awfull dont you agree!
i bought a xbox 360 but sold it after a few weeks!
graphics are dam to ugly even in hd

Well i cannot fully agree with you at some point.. If you play Red Dead Redemption, Alan Wake, Forza Motorsport 4 and some other titles so i can say they have beautiful graphics but of course PC Gaming is Superior when it comes to Graphics and i preffer to play games on PC.. usually i only play those games on X360 which are badly optimized on PC like Splinter Cell Conviction, LA Noire etc. or which only hits the consoles ;) you know what i mean.. and First Person Shooters are meant to be played on PC :p

I get some frame rate drop in some games, but I honestly think the issue is with the game and not necessarily the console. Most of my games play just fine and look pretty good. Forza 4, Gears of War, Call of Duty, etc.

I'm playing BF3 currently on my PC, but then again I've only really ever played the Battlefield series on the PC. Sure, it looks nicer, but I'm also running a $350 video card...which alone cost more than my 360....so I would really expect it.

Well the 550ti is an ok card, but my 2 year old $450 GTX 480 still blows it away and won't need to be upgraded for another year or more... In fact for $350 the 480 is actually a decent buy even today!

So I generally agree with you (For example spending $1000 on a 590 is just a bit loony) The more expensive cards DO have a longer life time regarding performance. $350 for a good current card isn't bad, the 550ti is /ok/ but a tad under performing and so it basically, right now, is just good enough, by next year you may find yourself under the curve already and needing to spend another $150 to keep up where as a 580 card to day will be good for 3 years.

In the end it evens out $$$ wise ok... Unless you are buying the very top line cards, then it never make $$$ sense, but I guess you get to yell "Booya!" if you want, and for some people that's worth it I guess :)

I didn't want a 550TI. I use some video rendering software which makes use of the CUDA technology and the 570 has 480 processor cores versus 192 on the 550TI. My EVGA 570GTX also came with a lifetime warranty from EVGA, versus the 2 years that the EVGA 550TI comes with. And I don't like to upgrade my video all that often. I expect this card will last "me" 3+ years easily. My 570 has more memory than the 550TI and a faster memory interface.

There is no way that I would have ponied up $500 or $600 for a video card, but $300-$350 wasn't an issue.

ok sonny jim bob..listen the gtx 550 overclocksl ike a dream,,the 55o gtx ti is better on most newer games than a gtx 480!plus your gtx 480 uses a lot more power and produces more heat!
I have sli 550ti gtx and let me tell you sonny jim bob,im getting 580 performance!
for a fraction of the price of 580.
also the sli use about the same power as you beast gtx 48!
the 480 gtx are so power hungry and run so hot man,,they are best avoided

Ok, none of that negates anything I said, but... ok... Sure, run two of them and overclock them and they may beat the 480/580 some (550 ti scores about half the speed of the 480 in some 3d tests). Course you have the issues you always get with sli. and the same cost as a 480 and the same power consumption. I've even seen people say their 550ti was running at 97C which is higher than I've ever seen my 480 go (though I do hit 90-93 on warm days)

The entire 500 line is nothing more than the exact same 400 line cards with slightly better (15-20%) performance boost and slightly less power number by number. The 550 (ti) (oc) scores as much as half the speed of the 480 in some tests.

As with most things in the universe, everything ads up to the same number :)

But remember his GTX480 is over 2 years old. Granted, today you can buy 550TI's and SLI them and get the performance of a much older card for less cost. But over 2 years ago, the 550TI wasn't available and at such a low cost, so this wasn't a solution for him. And like anything else, over time things get more powerful and cost less money. It's just the nature of things.

In many respects, the overclocked SLI 550TI combo might not really perform that much better real world than an overclocked GTX 570....and the price difference won't be huge ($250-$280, versus $275-$320). And then you don't have to deal with SLI, having 2 cards, more heat and more power draw and more noise from dual GPU fans. I just prefer the simplicity of a single card and would be willing to pay extra for a single card solution.

On the flip side, My Xbox360 which I bought in May of 2006, which is almost 6 years old is still playing all of the current games for the platform without requiring any upgrades. the same cannot be said for my PC.

Upgrades are only done when you want to have the latest and the greatest... so to speak.

I am still on DDR2 RAM, GTX260 and there is no FPS game my puter can not handle... I haven't had the need to update or upgrade solely because games are made for consoles and ported to PC so I am still light years away from having to update. ;) :D
