Solved Error Message: CB Monitor

Every time I shut down XP Virtual I get the message: "End Program - CB Monitor. Ending program please wait."

I've tracked down the file causing the problem which is nic1394 found in:

C:/Windows/System32/Drivers/nic1934

If this file is deleted, or the file made inactive by typing .bak as the extension, the error message does not appear when shutting down.

However, on rebooting a new file has been created in either of the above scenarios.

Any suggestions on how to turn it off permanently would be welcome.

Everything I run across for this says to disable any unused network cards/adapters to stop this error.

Thank you very much for the input. I'm sure that must be the problem. My mobo has two onboard network adapters, with one disabled via Device Manager in Windows 7; and a Bluetooth adapter attached to an internal USB header. However, in Device Manager in Virtual XP it only shows one adapter, and says it's working properly; and no Bluetooth adapter.

However, whenever I shut Internet Explorer 9 in Windows 7 after finishing browsing, and then run StevenGould CleanUp to remove temporary files, etec, it always says it has detected one or more browsers running.

I'm not sure how, but I think Virtual XP is somehow detecting the same thing.

I'm probably a bit off topic with this problem as it's more an XP problem than a Virtual XP problem, but I very much appreciate the input.

You might see if disabling the extra network adapter in Windows 7 or in your BIOS (if option is available for that there) may help instead. This way the virtual XP will never see it.

Thanks heaps Shawn. You've done it again! Already had it disabled in Device Manager in Windows 7, but never thought to do it in BIOS. Disabled it in BIOS and it has fixed the problem. Absolutely brilliant! This forum is one of the best I've come across.

Log off causes error.

Update: Initially it appeared that disabling the 2nd network adapter in the BIOS had fixed the problem. However, it began to occur again after I ran CleanUp, (a program by Steven Gould), before shutting down.

CleanUp removes cookies, newsgroup caches & subscriptions, and empties the recycle bin. However, it requires either a shut down, or log off/on to completely remove the deleted files. If a log off/on was done after running Cleanup and before shutting down, then the error message occurred again every time. However, if after running CU, the shut down was done without logging off/on, then the error message did not occur. So it appeared that CleanUp was the culprit, and the work around was to simply shut down without log off/on, to totally remove the files deleted by CU.

To check this out, a dozen trials were done, without using CleanUp. In each case, after start up, a different simple program was run on Virtual XP. In half of the tests, a log off/on was done before shut down; and every time the error message came up! The other six were shut down without log off and closed quickly with no error messge. This meant the log off/on was culprit, and it was coincidental that logging off/on after running CleanUp triggered the error message.

I'm at a loss to explain why this happens, but the simple work around is to not log off before shut down. I'm not suggesting this would be a generic solution for all environments, as it may just be peculiar to my PC; which has a SATA3 SSD hard drive, extreme Intel mobo, i7960 CPU, Gigabyte GTX550 graphics card, & 12GB Kingston DDR3 1333 RAM.
