Solved CHKDSK taking forever on 60 GB HDD.

i'm checking for errors on my secondary HDD and it's been stuck around the same spot for like forever (it's like 3 hrs into the error checking). B4 checking for errors, I already know that the HDD has a SMART event. If CHKDSK is taking forever, does it also mean that my HDD is gonna fail?

EDIT: finally it's done after like 4 hrs.

How many gigabytes of data was there to check. My external Hard Disk has 248 gigs of data and it took 114 seconds to finish running Check Disk. In the end I got the following message.



4 hours seems a lot on the high side and needs to be further investigated.

If chkdsk is taking forever, it's usually because your disk has a lot of errors which check disk is trying to correct or read from. Let it run. Check the logs to see what the scan found. Sometimes you can get away with a few bad blocks, other times it's a sign of impending doom. If you keep using the drive, make sure you back up religiously!

If chkdsk is taking forever, it's usually because your disk has a lot of errors which check disk is trying to correct or read from. Let it run. Check the logs to see what the scan found. Sometimes you can get away with a few bad blocks, other times it's a sign of impending doom. If you keep using the drive, make sure you back up religiously!

There are too many bad sectors on the hard disk. I think it would be wiser to save all the data that you can and replace this disk with a new one.

Fire up HD-Tune and run a check. If you see red, they are dead.

Adding 6524 bad clusters to the Bad Clusters File.

IMNSHO, ^ that message right there tells me Replace the hard drive without thinking twice.

at least 5 Years old. Came from my broken ps3 that was purchased in 2007. I just put unimportant files and fraps videos on to that HDD.

Ok i ran chkdsk /r . But it closes by itself, is it normal?

A 5 year old ps3 60 gig drive really isn't worth putting much time into. With that many errors I would just get another drive.

As I have said, i use it to store unimportant files. i'm planning to keep using the 5 year old HDD until it dies or until I notice it makes my computer unstable/slow.

Hi,

It would close itself if you were running it from a CMD window which is not elevated, so yes that is normal. Try running the command from an elevated cmd window.

If you want an alternative disk check try a surface test with Partition Wizard Best Free Partition Manager for Windows | MiniTool Partition Free install it and run as in my pic - it is a physical test rather than a software one ie the platter surfaces and to some extent the read / write arm and actuators.

I was running CHKDSK on a good partition. It looked like it was getting stuck in phase 4 because the percentage complete was going up so slowly. I gained confidence when I used Resource Monitor to see the speed at which the disk was being accessed. A quick "back-of-the envelope" calculation based on the speed and disk size gave me an estimate that it would complete in 2.5 hours. It was done when I came back several hours later.
