Do you have any networked drives?

Also check the Event Log > Microsoft > Windows > Diagnostics > Performance > Operational and look for entries with event IDs in the 100s (101, 102, etc.). There might be some that are useful.

i dont have any networked drives attached and in the event log there is loads of 100s event ids so what could be causing it to lock up in normal mode but not in safe mode its a fresh build and fresh install from full reformat with system reserve drive as well.

If it's slow in normal boot but not in Safe Mode then it's most likely a start-up program ordriver causing the delay. If you have any event IDs of 101, these will show if a program is causing a delay in start-up and it will tell you which one.

SATA mode is fine for your hard drives, though, assuming they are SATA drives.

If you would like im sure multiple members in this forum could examine your event viewer log.

I uploaded a picture. Basically do a right click>Save all event as.

We may be able to help you determine which programs or what is causing the system to take longer than expected to finish booting up

just checked all the hardware in the computer and it is fine i ran both linux ubuntu 10 and windows 7 on the computer and they both stopped randomly but then ran the computer for about 3 hours in safe mode and there was no problems it didnt stop once so what service or driver could be stopping the machine from working the only things installed are os and mboard drivers no external ( i.e graphics card) drivers are installed but it also stops in normal mode if there are.
