Windows 7 64 bit - BSOD 3 times today!

Hi, first post!

Wife was surfing earlier today and 3 times she encountered the BSOD. I've done as many checks as you would expect from an aged pensioner!

System: Dell Inspiron ONE 64 bit AMD about 2 years old. Came with Windows 7 Home Premium all pre-installed to which I have added SP1. The system is otherwise pretty much as it arrived.

Both required files are too large to attach to this post and therefore, I have linked them as suggested.

I should be most grateful for any advice or suggestions as to how I can eliminate these occurrences in future.

Several issues


1-Most of these were related to whats called a BCC116 (video reset)

"It's not a true crash, in the sense that the bluescreen was initiated only because the combination of video driver and video hardware was being unresponsive, and not because of any synchronous processing exception".

Since Vista, the "Timeout Detection and Recovery" (TDR) components of the OS video subsystem have been capable of doing some truly impressive things to try to recover from issues which would have caused earlier OSs like XP to crash.

As a last resort, the TDR subsystem sends the video driver a "please restart yourself now!" command and waits a few seconds.

If there's no response, the OS concludes that the video driver/hardware combo has truly collapsed in a heap, and it fires off that stop 0x116 BSOD.

If playing with video driver versions hasn't helped, make sure the box is not overheating.

Try removing a side panel and aiming a big mains fan straight at the motherboard and GPU.

Run it like that for a few hours or days - long enough to ascertain whether cooler temperatures make a difference.

If so, it might be as simple as dust buildup and subsequently inadequate cooling.

I would download cpu-z and gpu-z (both free) and keep an eye on the video temps Let us know if you need help

How To Find Drivers:

- search Google for the name of the driver
- compare the Google results with what's installed on your system to figure out which device/program it belongs to
- visit the web site of the manufacturer of the hardware/program to get the latest drivers (DON'T use Windows Update or the Update driver function of Device Manager).
- if there are difficulties in locating them, post back with questions and someone will try and help you locate the appropriate program.

3-AVG


AVG can be a contributing cause of BSOD'S . Please remove and replace with Microsoft Security Essentials AT LEAST TO TEST

Unbelievably quick response! Thanks ever so much.

I think my son installed AVG while I already have MSE. Both are active. I hadn't noticed AVG was active because it is a free version and therefore only runs on demand.

I will turn it off as suggested and monitor for a few days.

Just an update here as promised.

So far, computer up all day and yesterday since turning off AVG but leaving the mail scanner operative.

I recall now my son installed AVG to remove a troublesome threat that MSE passed over.

I prefer MSE having used it for a couple of years without any problem. Perhaps not the right place to post but can anyone advise whether MSE checks incoming emails?

If so, I can then remove AVG altogether.

Glad you are working, I dont use MSE so I cant help, but you can probably find out by asking in the system security section.
