A virtual machine is essentially contained within a single file. Mounting the Virtual Machine (VDI) to your host, will give you access to the virtual machine files. This software seems to be able to mount VDIs. And of course, do it while not running the Virtual Machine.
You will find it in /media but you must be a member of the vboxsf group to open it.

I had the same problem in 11.04. I can't remember if I got around it. I went back to 10.10 until 11.10 came out. There must be a way but I have the horrible feeling that you need to do it via the shell and I am not expert enough to do that.

The new "Unity" interface that came out with Ubuntu recent versions can be really difficult to figure out. Sorry to state the obvious, but if you're having problems with figuring out how to do things in Ubuntu, you should be going to the Ubuntu forums with those questions.
