How many cores will Windows 7 support?

I have an HP Z800 with Dual W5580's and 48GB of memory. As many of you know, you can enable the "Hyperthreading" to get 16 virtual cores.

Does anyone know if Win 7 will see all of these cores?
If not does anyone know of a Vista or Win 7 hack that will allow the full use of all the cores?

For those that care, this machine is part of a larger distributed farm that runs traffic simulation software. Benchmarks on equivalent DL160G6 w/Server 2003 R2 have shown worthwhile improvement in runtimes with "hyperthreading" enabled, so we are inclined to have it enabled on the Z800. The workstation does not support a Win Server install (several attempts have failed) and so we are limited to XP 64, Vista 64 and Win7.

Hello hydra33shok, Welcome.

At this point, we know it supports 4. It will be around when 8 cores hit, and probably when 16 cores hit. Maybe even 32.
I sure hope it supports 8, and it had better support 16. If they were smart, they would support up to 64.

Do you currently have any OS running on it now?

Throw virtualbox on there and install 7 on there.

I'm trying to set my virtual 7 os to 16 cpus right now to see if it'll work.

If you are limited to XP64 Vista64 W7x64 then the choice is obvious.W7 should have no problems using all 8cores(16 hyperthread) The only difference between W7 and Win Server is the 2 socket and 128GB ram limit.
So as long as you are running only 2 CPU's and stay under 128GB ram you should be able to open that baby full throttle.:D

It definitely supports 8 cores - I had it running on a dual E5440 Xeon system. I believe the client license is for 2 CPUs max, regardless of cores.

The number of cores has always been unlimited in NT, and even the Starter edition will support an unlimited # of cores. The limit that they do impose is the number of CPU sockets, which they cap at 2 for HomePrem and higher and 1 for S and HB. If you want more than 2 sockets, you have to get one of the server SKUs.

Yes

That is a terrific suggestion. I have downloaded Win 7 and Virtualbox to do some testing. Hopefully I can fill any any driver holes with Vista drivers.

Very impressed with how helpful everyone here is. Thanks a TON!
