I'm new here and want to know something.

USB-in-XP.jpg

The image above is from Windows XP. When we insert USB drive, XP shows the drive with it’s name. We can rename it also. It’s very nice.

usb-in-7.jpg

But in Win7, I always see “Removable Disk” like above. I tried it renaming. But same result. I use USB vaccine. So I can’t use any autorun.inf file for label option in autorun.inf. What can I do to see my name in USB in Win7

Hi. :)

Sometimes renaming internal or external hard disk you risk to make the disk unusable and lose data.

For the specific case is better to copy\paste in safe place all the data from your usb drive.

Then right click on the usb drive, click format, choose quick format,in the Volume Label space write the name you like, click start to format the drive with the new name.

As you can see in my attachments my usb drive name was MULTIBOOT and i format\rename it to PANAIS.

Finish
with this and post back with results.

Hi Kamrul
In case if the above advised by Panais is done. But, you still see it displayed as "removable disk". Then you may have to suspect you antivirus is preventing it from displaying its real name.
That is what I have here with Avira AV (don't know about the other AV). Such an annoyance to me. But hell, I still have no plan to move to other AV programs. ;)

I didn't apply your method ever, because my USB (16GB) always remains full with data. I keep all data in USB collected from my HDD. Your method is easy and nice. Are there any ways to rename USB without formatting.? If no ways I'll follow your method.
I use Microsoft Security Essentials. Thanks again.

Well I can rename mine but it forces all uppercase even with the format, so hopefully someone can help you and it may help me.

I noticed it does this for panais as well but it only started doing this for me after I formatted it the other day.

Microsoft Security Essentials does not conflict with usb renaming.

I recommend this method because is "safe"

I think you'll find that any USB drive formatted with the FAT32 file system forces the drive name to appear as upper case lettering.

NTFS has no such effect.

NTFS has no such effect.

Well that's probably why. It use to be NTFS but I used FAT32 this time because I had to test as a boot drive for some software.

Yes,this is correct if you want to avoid the upper case lettering format the usb in NTFS but this is not really important.

I personally dont mind for this so i format the usb in default FAT32.

Though in some cases formatting in windows 7 in NTFS format it may cause problems if after this you use the usb drive in win xp.

Yes, I think panais is right. I found no ways more to rename. But it is not appreciative option of Win7. Thanks all.

USB name Removable Disk due to anti-virus

Comodo antivirus will always cause your USB stick name to be displayed as "Removable disk" if the stick has any item named autorun.inf (file or folder) in the root directory.

If you delete autorun.inf, the name you labelled the USB stick with (MY32GB etc.) will be displayed.
