Solved No LAN Connection after power outage

I think the solution to my problem ended up being a short, but I do not know. This situation occurred on a Monday afternoon. Tuesday evening, the computer died. I removed the power cable and inserted it the next morning, attempted to turn it on and it did boot up. Wednesday night, installed an eSATA cable onto the SATA 2 #2 port onto my motherboard and tried the new eSATA drive today (Thursday). I noticed that when I booted up today, that I had Internet on my computer.

The idea that the power outage might have shorted something out does not make sense, as I'd seen on another thread, one user (different forum) had a multi-boot system on their computer. Windows had the same problem as I had, while their Linux box did not.

There's an old saying from a skit my brother did in Boy Scouts, "I guess all it took was the right jerk!". Maybe I (the jerk), jerked something and made a connection while installing the eSATA cable.

I do have VirtualBox. I've tried uninstalling it and my computer stalls upon prepairing for uninstallation.

I've tried Windows repair and system restore. No luck. I did both with (requiring reboot) and without the installation disc. When trying to run system restore inside Windows (without disc), it stalls.

I've power cycled my router. No change. My wireless clients work fine. The computer having a problem is wired to the router. I've tried changing the port on the back of the router. No luck.

My Desktop has both wired and wireless, but I always connect wired. I disabled my wireless, disabled, then enabled my LAN and also tried a diagnosis, which couldn't find the problem.

Edit: I made sure that both IPv4/IPv6 settings were set to Automatic. I just went ahead and tried reassigning an actual IP under IPv4 and when applying the action, my computer froze. That is, the circle kept going.

Edit 2: I've tried a few other things and no luck. All of these froze:

• Deleting nForce driver
• Reinstalling nForce driver
• PC Tools Registry Mechanic

Also tried Malwarebytes. No errors on the quickscan. The full scan did not complete, it froze.

I also was attempting to insert the Win 7 disc, select repair and installing the nForce driver from there. No luck, it said something about the file not being in the correct format. I tried with both the exe and the setup program extracted from the exe.

I think I'm convinced that I've wasted more time on this than it takes to reinstall everything, but I don't want to do this, as I'd like to know if there's a way to fix this if it happens again.

I also tried running a batch file I found on another thread. (flush/register dns, release/renew IP)

Please help.

I would go ahead and reset the router once again, "sometimes it takes two times for them to set correctly". You can also try using the routers reset button or the routers set up page.

I need to note that also when doing an ipconfig /release, it gave me a message about a Loopback Pseudo Interface 1. I've never seen this before.

I think I'm convinced that I've wasted more time on this than it takes to reinstall everything, but I don't want to do this, as I'd like to know if there's a way to fix this if it happens again.

When you've got problems with driver installers and other utilities failing to run for no obvious reason, reinstallation is the best way to fix it. Your installation has been severely damaged, for reasons unknown, and the amount of time it would take to figure out why so much software isn't working--in addition to your networking problem--would vastly exceed the time to do a reinstall.

Heroic efforts to rebuild a heavily damaged Windows installation are very rarely worth the trouble for anyone who has a retail Windows DVD and the skills to reinstall without destroying their data.

I really don't have the time to do this. I've got 600 GB of apps/data on my computer. This would take me a week, at least. I've searched online. This is not a new problem, but I still cannot find a solution.

There has to be some registry settings I can manipulate to fix the problem.

I've now tried CCleaner as well, and a full Malwarebytes scan. I'm currently waiting for a full Microsoft Security Essentials scan to finish.

Edit #2: Based on my ipconfig settings (mentioned here), I'm noticing that the subnet mask is also screwed up. Basically, it SHOULD be 255.255.255.0, not 255.255.0.0. I'm on a wireless laptop right now. Same network (subnet mask is 255.255.255.0). It's working just fine.

As per Chev65's suggestion. Reset your router again. Another thing worth doing is to see if there is a more up-to-date firmware for your router.

Re-installation isnt the best way to deal with this. It could be a hardware problem with the NIC so a re-install wont fix.

If you connect wirelessly do you get the same problem? Or does it just happen when you are wired? (These will be two different adaptors so may narrow the problem down).

Are there any errors in the event logs relating to TCP IP?

Also, what is the make and model of your router? And how old is it?

Router is Actiontec MI424WR Verizon FiOS Router, Rev C.

How do I view the specific event logs? I presume I'm looking for such event logs for the time frame around the power outage?

A factory reset of the router did not work. I also tried reinstalling my NIC driver (NVIDIA driver) with default router settings.

What about using something like TCP-Z? I have no idea how to use it, I downloaded it, ran it and put my computer in test mode as it said but the tool is confusing to use.

I also just had this thought. Considering that my problem arose after a power outage, would the problem with my Ethernet port be related to by BIOS at all? What if I tried flashing it to a newer version? (I've never tried flashing before).

Last night when attempting to insert my USB, my computer just shut of and would not turn back on. I unplugged it from the back overnight and when I plugged it back in, it automatically turned on without having to press the power button. The time is way off, now.

I do not know if this behavior is correct or not. My motherboard is a P5N-E SLI. When I plugged my cable into the port, the light when on and turned orange. Is that the color it's suppose to be, or is it suppose to be green? Again, I've never really noticed what color it is when connected (if different at all).
